i have just got my 8800gtx and am running it on a 500w psu which is the minamum for that card would i see any performance increase if i went up to a 750w psu or why do nvidia reccomend a 600w psu

Anybody else smell burning?

Time for a PSU upgrade I think :p

What's that PSU give out on the 12v rails?

If you check the sticker on the PSU you will get a few mumbers, something like this +12V1(18A) - what does yours show for the 12V rails

Well tbh I would'nt be confortable with that PSU as it's an unknown brand. Every cheap branded PSU I have had has blew within 12 months no lie. I switched to a OCZ and it's been plain sailing ever since.
If your spending £300+ on a GTX then I would'nt skimp on the PSU, if you list all your comp specs here I'm sure someone will spec you a perfect PSU for your budget.

i think it is 47amp total

I'm no expert on PSU's so take anything I say with a pinch of salt :)

47amp total so im assuming you have more than one 12V rail. My 520W OCZ Modstream only has 1 12V rail with just 28Amps, so you got me worried about my PSU now :o and im running 3 HD's.

Best wait for some other people to comment on your PSU, im gonna watch the thread also and see what they reccomend, what kind of budget do you have?

I know it's a kick in the teeth to buy a GTX then possibly have to shell out more cash on a PSU, but with such a valuble tower you would'nt want the PSU to go pop and take something else with it.

a recognised, decent 500w (seasonic/ocz/tagan etc) would be fine, I'd be a bit concerned about a generic 500w though.

I'd probably look for a cheap swap.

Ok now I'm worried! I've got a 700w Hipro psu that came with my pc. I've never heard of them before so has anyone experienced problems with these?

Google turns up practicaly nothing which is proberly a bad sign. There official website lists there PSU's and the stats don't look to bad on paper.

Personaly I would'nt trust them, but I have learned the hard way about cheap PSU's. Chances are it could last you years with no problems but I just would'nt feel safe leaving a "generic" PSU running in the house while there was no one home.

End of the day it's all down to money, people tend to skimp on PSU's they know they won't get any extra performance over a high rated PSU, say they would with a GFX card so they go for the cheap ones.

IMO if your always near your PC while it's on then I would'nt run out and buy a new one tomorrow, but if you leave it on 24/7 while the house is empty then I would be much more concerned, but im paranoid like that.

I personally think the psu is the cornerstone of a decent pc, in fact I like to go a bit OTT because they get changed so infrequently..

Over the last year I've had the same case (lian li pc7 although that was a change from a pc65, my cases really don't change much), same psu (seasonic 600w) and about 30 motherboards, gfx cards, cpus and memory (I'm exaggerating but you get the gist).

My advice would be to get yourselves a decent psu, they can be had for well under £100 then just forget all about it.

This talk of not leaving a psu on when you're out is madness (and a little OTT too I think) but anyway, if you feel that way about it, change it.
