Bought an OCZ 8800 GTX on Monday as the 2 cheapest versions were out of stock, had a look today and now the OCZ models are out along with several of the more expensive brands.
I think this has answered the question of "should i wait for R600 or buy a 8800GTX now".

Its the same story everywhere, everyones just got so fed up waiting for the R600, Nvidia will be enjoying it, they've had a clear run with zero competition for about 5 months now.

The R600 is supposed to be coming 30th March again now, really wish they would just get the damn thing out as i said in another thread, im sick to death of hearing about it now, its just R600 this R600 that, jesus just give it a rest and release the thing instead of going on and on... :p

Im fed up with people stating how fast it is and how it will trash the 8800gtx.

Yeah, pity no one knows that yet, it could do, and it could be no faster, its all just speculation to keep it alive, its been that long now that they are just trying to keep ppl's interest in it. :)

Somebody in another thread said it has 1 gig of ddr4, is that a known fact or more speculation? You would need a monitor the size of Hampshire to need 1 gig of video ram :D

Thats the trouble really i can see these cards being stupidly expensive, nvida's 8800gtx was pricey at first but its had time to drop prices, would someone spend say £500 on a r600 thats abit faster than a gtx or save a fortune and get the gtx.

I think we have hit it on the head right there.
NOTHING will need 1 GB of GDDR4 VRAM for like the next 2 or 3 years.
Thereofre at sensible resolutions the difference between the R600 and the 8800 GTX will not really be that much - if it is as fast as they boast then no CPU will be able to handle it, short of a Core 2 Quad extreme... Everything will be a bottleneck so there is litle point in spending so much money on it...
If the 8800 GTX was into the late £300s early £400s when it came out, this thing is going to be ridiculously expensive...

So being massively faster than the 8800gtx may not be enough, i think the R600 will need to hit the ground running at £350-£450, be readily available in large numbers and fantastic IQ/Driver support and i spose a low power consumption may help.
Anyway, back on topic, Ive had a little look at a few other e-tailers and 8800GTx's are very thin on the ground.

the head start nvidia gets for the past half a year is enough for them to put 8900 down and go for 9800 and pwn ati in 2nd half of this year

its amazing how things change .. i remember the first 3d fx cards coming out.. 8mb cards.. woo.. how good where they.. my fiest was a voodoo 1 .. what a card that was. i`m still running a 9800 pro i bought 3-4 yrs ago from ocuk and shipped out here.. still going strong.. am looking at a complete rebuild later this year.. will see what is best bang for buck and go with that.. if it`s ati good if not then hey nvidia it is..

Yeap been asking myself the question a lot lately, it all boils down to THE WAITING GAME ive been in it for ages;)

Regardless of what happens its the same case a newer/faster and cheaper card will appear within the following day of purchase if not 3 months.... or they will just drop the price big time and hit ya like a bomb !

I may just end up ordering off a EVGA 8800GTX, and E6600 rigg next week and skip my Q6600+R600 dream rigg ;)
