HI guys

Just asking if it would be worth going from a 8800GTX to something like the 4870 1GB seeing as the prices have come down loads.

CPU is a e6600 @3.7

I game at 1280x1024 as I have a 19 inch monitor. Would the new card be overkill or should i invest in a bigger monitor?

Thanks a lot

At that rez I would think that gtx should still be performing well, if you are considering a new monitor though I wouldnt go below a 280gtx if you want to see a descent improvement in performance.

Bigger monitor TBH.

I game at 1920x1200 and my GTX is still fine. :)

same, tbh the OP is only upgrading because he wanst to buy something. He cant possibly be struggling to max games but crysis. Get a bigger screen, but if your thinking of 24" Remeber they arnt cheap to get a good one, dont like TN pannels at all.

Bigger monitor, no questions asked. I went from a 19" to a 24" and the difference is amazing. I got a Yuraku with P-MVA panel for under £200 delivered last summer.
My 8800GTX is still fine at 1900x1200.Sure, i'm not running bleeding edge settings on Crysis, but any other game happily runs on high settings with some AA.

Wait until you have a real objective before upgrading the GTX. Personally I'm happy to wait and see what Larrabee and the other cards out in Q4 are like.
Rumour has it that Sony have chosen Larrabee for the graphics in the PS4, so it should be impressive.

If it was me, I'd hold out until next year and then get a monitor and a graphics card. For now, maybe invest in a second hand graphics card heatsink and overclock your card a bit. :)

If you do get a new monitor then your graphics card will not be as good as before and if you get a new graphics card it will be overkill for your screen. so choose if you want to either have an overkill card with a small monitor or a mediocre card with a good monitor.

8800GTX isn't mediocre. Its perfectly caperble at 24", i max all my games out on mine. Well but crysis, but thats no reason to buy a new card. So just get the new screen then a new card when needed.
