Guys,

Browsing through the site and came across the XFX8800GTX going for about £160.

Currently have BFG 8800GTS 320mb.

My screen resolution is 1680x1050.

Worthwhile upgrade?

I disagree. July is just a die shrinked chip again so just slightly better performance than the 9800GTX is now.

The GTX is perfect for that res and is a substantial upgrade from the GTS 320Mb.

Go for it and enjoy some gaming.

If you wait till July, somebody will only post that you should wait till September for the proper next gen cards to be out.

Agreed, The GTX will keep you gong for some time until there's an affordable next gen option and you'll notice a difference stepping up.

I don't think a going from a GTS to a GTX is worth it.

I downgraded from a GTX to a GTS and it never bothered me doing so.

So I doubt the upgrade will make you drool.

It would be a tad disapointing imo.

Would be worth it from the 320mb GTS id have thought, as at that res hes probably having to turn details down, and forget about AA/AF etc... as hes memory limited with only 320mb. :)

Didn't you downgrade to a G92 GTS? Hardly the same?????

And the the res we are talking about you have at least a 50% gain in fps. Hardly insignificant and better than the G92 cards has given anybody.

You'll be drooling if the new cards in July give a 50% boost (which i doubt they will)

I just wanted to konw if anyone has used the XFX 8800GTX xxx cards in dual SLi yet, I was tempted for a new system, especially as they are £200 each now, but I am not sure if there is much or a performance gain. any ideas would be very welcome

Either Easy didn't read that you have a 320Mb GTS at 1680x1050 or he doesn't know what he's talking about but I think he's just misread your post :o. He's getting senile in his old age :D.

I'd go for the GTX also. A great card and much better than your 320mb card for 1680x1050.

I think for the price it's a great deal.

You're getting quicker clocks, 128sp and more memory and larger bus. So it would be perfect for gaming at 1680x1050 and upwards. For the 3 months or so wait until we see what next comes out I'd say it's money well spent and if you are not happy, you can always sell it again.

A gts/g92 or a gtx would be a nice upgrade at that rez in games .

My gts/g92 at max stable clocks out performs my gtx at max clocks at that screen rez .

Personally my opinion is if you can sell the card to a mate for close to a ton then go for it. It'd be worth the extra outlay.

Very decent card.

Had a 7950GX2 a while back and found no reason to go to the 320mb or even 640mb GTS as they offered no real improvement in performance. Only the GTX could do that and i saw a really decent jump in performance when i moved to one. Incidentally, i gamed @ 1680x1050 then too. ;)

gt

No I downgraded to a 320mb GTS as the G92 versions were not out then.

I'm not saying its a bad upgrade I'm just saying its not that huge having owned both the cards you mention.

If you can sell the GTS for say 60 and get a GTX for 100 more then its a no brainer.

Just don't expect a massive boost.

I never found the 320mb card that limiting tbh at that res tbh.

I did. It just didn't have enough oomph. My GTS G92 is not as fast as a GTX but I can tell a massive difference to my old GTS 320Mb.

Going from 20fps to 30fps makes a hell of a difference

I never found the 320mb card that limiting tbh at that res tbh.

I did at the lower res of 1280x1024, had to start turning details down, reducing AA down to 2x, or use none at all, and even sometimes having to drop my resolution down as well, as dropping details, AA etc.. wasn't enough. :)

I was in the same situation than you and i bought the gtx. I don't have any regrets but the only game where I see a clear improvement was Crysis (the rest of the games get more fraps but still with similar settings but sometimes higher AA)

I have just performed the exact same upgrade as yourself 8800GTS 320MB to a XFX8800GTX and I hate to say it; but I am seriously underwhelmed!

I estimate I am seeing roughly only a 10% increase in frames across most games.

Bit dissapointed tbh :(
