8800gtxs freezing up in 3d mode

I've been having a stupid freezing in game problem with my pc for awhile now, been trying everything but as it happens randomly it's hard to nail down.

Basically randomly ingame the game will freeze onscreen, sometimes the sound will keep chugging on. I used to just reboot assuming it was a whole pc lockup until I realise that the keyboard leds still worked, I can't tab out the game without my pc locking up but I can either standby my pc and load it back up or kill the process with process explorer.

Very annoying problem, I can play for days on end and then suddenly it will lock up constantly in games until it decides to randomly go away.

Any ideas? Cpu is orthos stable, my 8800gtxs are both at 60cish, I'm not overclocking anything, it's happy with the blend on orthos... ??????

c2d e6600 (stock)
evga 680i sli
2gb cellshock ddr 1000 (running at 800 because the mobo hates me)
creative fatality.
2 8800gtx in sli.

It feels like the graphics drivers are seizing up because it will only bring the system down if I dare to alt-tab.

Btw, sorry if this isn't a help forum, toss up between throwing it into general discussion or this more specific one.

EDIT: forceware 97.92

This is the correct forum. Have you tried just running a single GTX? The driver support for 8800 SLI's might now be there yet.

I've disabled sli and tried Q4 and TDU (which runs slightly better on one gpu, go figure) and they both still freeze, randomly. I'll try some more games as I install them, just come off a windows reinstall.

I've noticed it will freeze on ANYTHING 3d, including screensavers and emulators however in window mode the behaviour is slightly different, I can 'unstick' it by rapidly changing focus between the taskbar and said game.

Try some later drivers if any are available or try the XG drivers, they give a good performance boost and add a few fixes. If you don't want it to set your desktop res back to like 640x480, create a new user account and install from there, that's what i did.

Having troubles finding an XP driver that is compatible with the 8800...

Tried various tweaked 97.92s but games are still locking up :'(

Tried the 100.87 and the 100.95, same problem  even if they did magically fix it, no sli support and I can't control the fans.

Anything else I should try? Tearing my hair out.

I Been using 2 GTS in SLI, but when I first built this rig, with two Evga cards, the first one I installed seem to work ok in 2D mode, but when I started stressing the card in 3D it fell down. I chucked in the other in and all was ok. Being abit down on spending al that time effort putting it together I tried the two cards in SLI and at first I thought maybe I hadnt seated the first card properly and then bink.... System crashed.

I had to send the first card back for RMA which OC were quick enough in turning around and at least I had a card left to play with till I got anopther replacement. I think you should test both cards individually to see if one of them is faulting. There pretty powerful cards anyway, one should do in the meantime if you find one aint playing ball.

I've not been ignoring you guys, just been having a few problems with migrating isp and replicating the problem.

The freeze up occurs in batches so if it's behaving itself, nothing I can do will make it freeze =)

Ok, I've been collating evidence in a vain attempt to narrow this annoyance down.

First off, tried both gtxs on their own and as far as I can tell, they're both flawless (although one is slightly cooler then the other by 2c) so it doesn't appear to be any one card.

The locks up must then be down to SLI, I've noticed I can tell a split second before my game locks up a very short, brief flicker, a black flicker, before the 3d application locks up.

Also, I found my screen displaying a nasty corruption or some such, not seen something like that before (I have upload a picture, here ) This has only happened once, so fingers crossed it's nothing serious.

I've found out the problem the TDU, it's freezing is down to my ps2 controller, seemingly one little usb device causes it to choke and die..

As sods law dictates, after I tested both cards singularly and finding no problems, it's working perfectly now all put back together apart from totally random crippling slow downs in all 3d applications. Even rthdribl stutters.

In C&C3 random parts of the map will become unplayable as fps will drop down to 5fps for no reason at all, and in Quake4 the game runs wonderfully until my character is hit, then bang... 1 maybe 2 fps until the blur effect disappears.

Banging my head on what's causing this and why it's manifesting itself in such random non-consistent errors.

EDIT: I'm getting the black flicker and lockup in the windows desktop now :'( even without loading up any 3d apps.
