8Core AMD for gaming ???

Hi peeps, I'm going for yet another build, This time im thinking on a amd 8 core build, never been too keen towards the amd side of things but tempted to go for it depending on the answers i get lol.

Use's i want it for are -

Gaming (highest graphics if possible from this processor)

Game creation using multiple programs

Video editing.

General internet use.

Now thats all im after it for, It will have 32GB ram and setup with a decent graphics card (or two) but as i have no experience with AMD i would like to know if the piledriver or any 8 core setups will do the job...

Any feedback would be good, i would prefer personal experience rather than googled results lol.

Compared to the similarly priced i5 3570K, the FX 8350 is not as good in games. It seems to be unable to compete on higher graphics/resolutions.

If your gaming mostly, I'd recommend a i5 3570K. But if you often do video editing and use intensive applications which use more than 4 threads, then the FX is certainly worth a look at.

There are some decent benchmarks on the internet:)
 
As above have a gander around at benchmarks with the software you will be using, the FX stuff tends to only shine in very well threaded environments.

Also from my limited experience of the FX chips you need to budget for a decent motherboard to avoid throttling. Have a quick google about that might make you change your mind about a FX set up.

The i5 3570K is a similar price I would tend to go with that, its also a fair bit easier to overclock / less power hungry.
 
Shame, When ive googled it before it seems that its either good at one thing or the other :-( ... I might just go for it and buy a 6 core i7... the benchmarks on them seem pretty impressive and worth the money but was hoping a budget system with amd processor would do the job ... I didnt think it would be good enough, ive had amd pc's before (not by choice i might add) and they were nothing compared to intel pc's.

like others have said if your mostly gaming go i5.

If you do render / edit that kind of thing go for the 8 core.

There isn't too much difference between the i5 and PD maybe 10fps in some games that aren't coded for multiple core at the moment.

Once games are coded better for multicore the 8 core will give better results.
 
I have my xbox 360 mostly for games, but enjoy a pop on my pc from time to time, In game creation im using programs that need a lot of processing power, my setup is not the one in the sig thats my old build, havent been on her in ages so havent updated it lol

My current setup is a i7 1st gen, 16gb ram, 128gb ssd, 4gb graphics card (older gen amd card)

It's ok ... i got given it so couldnt complain, if im honest my intel i5 2300 was quicker :-(

I was doing the editing on a Acer lamborghini i7 laptop which handlled everything i threw at it but unfortunatley when i was on holiday my car was broken into and it was stolen ...

So hence the new build :-)
 
A quadcore intel such as 3570k or 3770k would be better, 3770k definitely better for video editing due to it's HyperThreading ability
 
The 8350 has no problems maxing out my 6950 so if your using the 560Ti would be much the same. It is slightly weaker on single threaded apps but on x264 render apps is almost on a par with 3770 and better than a 3570. Multithread games it is comparable with the intel CPU's also.

Regarding power usage, my 8350 will use 250W at 4.6GHz which is also comparable to an overclocked 3570/3770.

It is largely down to personal preference, mine being AMD but I am not hidebound. I like the flexibility to have high bus clocks to maximise memory etc. and I am used to AMD overclocking.

I use a mid range ASUS M5A99X Evo board and 2133 ram.

Wouldn't discount it, but doesn't really have a proven track record like the i7 (3770k) does..

For me, your choice will depend on your budget.. Have you got one in mind?
 
the 8350 as has been said will give you better performance on multi threaded apps and games but single it is slightly weaker, if you have the money the i7 is the better choice but between the i5 and an 8 core piledriver it is down really to personal preference as the i5 will do better in some aspects and the piledriver in others
 
hopefully newer games out especially once the new xbox is released will be coded towards more multi-threadded cpu's this "might" make the piledrivers get better results than i5's in the future.

That is all speculation though.
