guess at how long till we will see 8core cpu's at under £400?
i recon at summer 2011

sorry for the random thread but i always like guessing at how fast tec advances. with i7 its been faster than i guessed.

I'll probably do a major upgade this year. I've been doing incremental upgrades for a while now but when the 8 cores do come out I'll probably got for a hex core and that with the new mobo, tri channel ram should see some significant performance jumps.

8 core availability should hopefully drop the hex core prices.

As said previously not much software takes advantage of the cores. However maybe with all these chips coming out developers will start writing more scalable software. Hopefully that will happen faster than it took 64bit to take off!

A lot of 'serious software' i.e. not games does take advantage of multi core esp. in the graphics and video arena.

The arrival of affordable 6, 8 & 12 cores can't come soon enough.

I reckon on Q2 2011 for 8 core to start being accessible to the enthusiast who doesn't have bottomless pockets.

2014-2016, games using them about 2050. :p

nah it says something about next year when AMD's Bulldozer comes out :D but yeah they are server processors really. i dont expect many games will even be using 6 cores for the next year or 2. they just dont need/cant use them.
