Would it be worth getting an 8gb card if I only ever plan to use 1 card? I will probably get a higher res monitor in the future but not 4k obviously with 1 of these

Even at 1080P some games use more than 4GB, if you can afford the extra £40 or whatever it is for the 8GB model I would say it's worth it. Your literally getting double the vram for a little extra. Better to have it just in case than not to have it there at all. Especially if you're planning on keeping the card for a while. Games are only going to get more demanding.

I can vouch for the MSI 8GB 290X, fast, runs cooler than ref. Nice backplate / solid build quality.

Someone else mentioned to me that x1 card would run out of GPU grunt before you use the 8GB, so only worth it if you get x2. Is that true? I was considering this card, but now unsure. Either this or a 980.

This is what made me ask it, as I know it use to be the case.
At present I am at 1080, but in the future I intend on going 3 monitors or a higher res one probably 1440

If you're going to get a 980, might as well spend a bit more and get a 295x2, which also only has 4gb, but which will totally ruin a 980.

Oh yeah and an 850w+ good brand psu to run it :D

I did see those, looks impressive. I have an 850W EVGA G2. Would that handle it? Does it get roasting hot? I have an H440 so that would be my other concern with this card.

well i think looking at your response, 8Gb will become very useful in a 3 monitor or that 1440 even. especially as people say the more ram hungry games.

Any recommendations for the msi 290x 8gb in crossfire? @1440p gaming
320 seems like a great price, why is the sapphire 100 more?
I was wondering the very same thing. Same price as a 970 (well, the reference version anyway), and what would appear to be far better future proofing.

Sorry but you're wrong, I think any 850w would struggle with a 295x2-based system. This is one VERY hungry card...
From reviews I've read, that does seem to be the problem with this card.
