To defend the Titan Black (or so we thought, maybe it was to help 4GB 970/980 sales). Just like they put the breaks on ASUS's dual GTX680 MARS III card before launch to defend the GTX690. The is no flagship to defend right now or in the imminent future so we will probably see 8GB GTX970's like we did 4GB GTX670's (same half filled PCB).

Titan Black is barely EOL, plenty of cards to clear.

I think after xmas I have got some serious building to do.

You never know the Titans could come with 16gb of vram just to keep the console ports in their place.

It will also keep the people who will moan about the likely price very happy, win win all round.
