8GB help/advice

I realise 8GB of ram is uncommon atm but have a specialist need to run a shed load of memory to support multiple VMware virtual machines on a sinlge physical PC.

Of course I need a 64bit OS, a motherboard which supports 8GB of RAM i.e. 4 x 2GB DIMMs but what I cant seem to find is a clear answer to some pretty important questions:

1) If the MB supports a max memory configuration of 8GB (e.g. Asus Striker Extreme), will I lose a huge chunk as seen by the 64bit OS from the BIOS mapping system resources in the 7-8GB address space?

2) If I install 4 x 2GB DIMMs which support DDR-2 800 with nice CAS4 timings is the mothboard going to stick two fingers up at the memory and knock its performance back in both speed & timing?

ATM the only MB I feel safe with is the Abit IN9 32 Max mainly cos of the memory timing control & support for 32GB. I think the MSI P6N Diamond supports 16GB but the board isn't out yet.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

*Update : I also see OCuk are stocking the OCZ Gold Series 4GB kit, anyone know how these perform as the timings aren't the best?

*Update : I also see that some BIOS versions support a 'memory remap' setting which in theory means an 8GB max MB can allow the OS to access all 8GB. Has anyone done it though or is it an expensive gamble....

Since information seems more than a little patchy on this subject, would it be possbile for OCuk to test the following combination if I were to order it?

Intel QX6700
Abit IN9 32X-MAX Wifi
G.Skill PQ series non-ECC DDR2-800 2 kits of (2 x 2GB DIMM) for a total of 8GB @ 5-5-5-15 2T

It makes no difference to me if the packaging has been opened.

It seems a little unreasonable that the risk of it not working @ default speeds lies with the consumer.

Apparently the Asus Striker Extreme is known to work with this configuration, G.Skill has also recommended the Asus P5NT WS as an alternative too. I guess they have tested both to some degree.

Hi there

We have added several more 4GB kits today along with 8GB kits too. :)

Our cheapest 4GB kit is now only £125+VAT (2x2GB Modules).

The products are there it cross compatiblity thats not.

What memory kit works with which motherboard? G.Skill quite clearly told me most 680i motherboards have problems running 4 x 2GB DIMMs.

Corsair 2GB DIMMs don't seem to work in the Asus Striker Extreme for example.

The plot thickens.... I have just got word directly from G.Skill that boards based on the Intel P965 have noooo problems :D

I am so not going to buy a 680I based board, those suckers may come with lots of features but they have been seriously rushed to market.

I hope others find this information useful.

OCuk please get those DFI Infinity P965-S boards in.
