Hi all from sunny Glasgow.

Currently using 4GB (4 x 1GB sticks) of:
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 XTC PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel (OCZ2P800R22GK)
purchased from this very boutique...

I run 3D animation software/photoshop and I notice severe system slowdown running two 3D apps at once (sounds mad, but I use Lightwave for 3D, which has two seperate components of the program).

Task manager says I'm using 3.9GB of Ram being used and this explains the slowdown - honestly, theres a 20 second delay between each step and the hard disk is thrashing...basically unusable.

My thinking now is that adding more Ram (as I seem to have reached the useful limit of what I have) would be in order.

So;
I'm looking for advice please on an 8GB kit that would run well on my DS3 board.
Im budget conscious so a GOOD cheaper option would be ideal.

Dont know if its useful info, but I use MS Server 2008 R2 (64 bit), Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HDD with 4GB of the above Ram and Motherboard.
I have overclocked my Q6600 to 3.4GB temps 47 idle 70 Max.
No problems at all.

I have tried my Pagefile settings at "System Managed" and set a static 6GB file min and max with the same result both times.

Any point in farting around with the pagefile in Win7, or just add more Ram as it seems to be required?

Thanks in advance, any help appreciated. :)

anyone?
Even just a point in the right direction?

Looking for a good solid 8gb kit for this board, thanks.

Spot on cheers!

Oops, when I said 8GB pack, I just meant 8gb of ram - in whatever flavour it came in!

4 x 2GB (2 of those you advised) would be magic.

No probs with the DS3 motherboard then, with it being PC8500 rather than PC6400>
Thanks.

Nope - it's always fine to plug faster ram into a board than it can technically handle (physical ram types allowing) - it'll just run slower than specs. As it stands, that's the best DDR2 offer on all of OCUK, regardless of speed, so it would be my choice too :)

You can also check your BIOS, see if there's a memory multiplier option that can pump it up to run full speed (should be, the DS3's were gigabytes good 'uns back in the day).

Just a thought....

6gb might be enough for me....

Would two sticks of this Ram play nice with two of the existing sticks of my OCZ ram I'm using just now?
My board has two sets of two dual channel ram sockets, and my thoughts are would his work with two seperate types of ram (OCZ and the Corsair)?

Thanks, ready to pull the trigger on this one. :)

That would be ok, as long as I can still hit 3GHz....

at the moment I PHYSICALLY do not have enough RAM for what I need my 'puter to do, so thats a bigger priority that maxing out the CPU.

Why would I have to reduce my OC though....?
:)

More ram puts more stress on the memory controller, and in turn more on the NorthBridge. I did only say MAY. You might be lucky!

Make sure you set the voltage correctly (default is 1.8 for this board)

For my Ocz ram, I have to run it at + 0.4 in the bios (so it becomes 2.2v)

Hiya, i use Blender and 3d-Coat and i'm in the same position (hitting ~4GB usage regularly). Currently running 4gb of Crucial DDR2 800 and i'm probably going to order another 4GB today. OcUK don't sell it anymore (bought my 4GB from them) but Crucial still sell it direct from their UK store for £70.

Part # is CT2KIT25664AA800

Obviously your OC potential will be lower than DDR2 1066, but i like the fact it runs at default voltage. They do 4GBx2 kits as well, but they are pretty spendy at £200+

I can't advise on whether your current OCZ will play nicely with the Corsair, as far as i know it's always a slight gamble mixing brands, especially different brands and different density. It might work fine but you just never know. I was runnign 2GB of corsair before i upgraded to 4GB, and Yellowbeard advised me not to buy another 2GB corsair kit as they would likely be incompatible due to changing chips etc.. (my set was 3 years old). So depending how old your OCZ stuff is, you might find a similar chance that the chips they used are considerably different to what is being sold atm.

Hey, thanks for that..
Not tied 3dcoat by the way, looks good...more of a zbrush man myself...

Well I think I'm going to buy it anyway, on the chance that it works...Fair chance it might, we'll see.
If not, I will have 4gb still, and the sale of my current Ocz 4gb kit will hopefully go a long way to funding the second set of 4gb ram...

Yeah, that's the plan.

No worries, hope the ram works out for you - at least with current prices you should get a fair return on your old set if need be.

3D-Coat is awesome, but not as polished as ZBrush, it has a much smaller community but it's coming along really well for a 2 year old program. The voxel sculpting is great because you don't have to worry about topology at all, you get totally uniform geometry all over the model. Zbrush still wins for ultra fine details, but i prefer 3D-Coat for everything else personally. Plus you can import meshes of pretty much any resolution and use them to 'cast' a voxel volume, and vice versa you can sculpt in 3D-Coat and export a super high rez surface mesh (20-30m+ poly) to ZBrush for further detailing or painting etc.. So they work really well together, i'm just too poor to afford ZBrush for now as it's only a hobby :)

3D-Coat has probably the best retopo tools available imo - and some great UV tools as well, but that new Auto-UV function in ZBrush looks pretty damn good too.

EDIT: sorry i just realised my post reads like an infomercial lol, i need more coffee.

an infomercial....:)

all thats missing is the cheesy american smile and teh "I used to weigh 28 stone..now ..thanks to the" comments.....

Oh, I'm checking out Modo as a follow on from Lightwave...9.6 is the last version of Lightwave before its radically changed, so looking at Modo as a replacement.
Blenders cool, didnt like Maya (and cant afford it!) and XSI wasnt for me.

Im going dual monitor soon too, looking fwd to modelling with two panels....supposed to be a lot better.

UPDATE:
Bought 4GB of the Corsair Ram.....runs a treat alongside my OCZ PC800!
Now showing 6GB @ 800MHZ....still managed to keep my overclock.

Sweet :)

I want to sell on my unused DDR2 800Mhz 4GB of OCZ though, to fund another 4GB of the Corsair making 8GB running at 1066Mhz.
Couple of questions?

Can I sell it on here at OCUK?
I would rather give something back to the community here that just sell in on Fleabay.?

Is there an appreciable speed improvement (i.e. will I actually SEE it) between 800Mhz and 1066Mhz?
Having the extra capacity is more important for me right now rather than absolute speed, but a speed boost would be good too.

Thanks.
