Tending to be right.
Ok installed another 4Gb DDR3 last night cos it was cheap and then promptly got booted off the computer by my daughter. I did notice whilst I was on though that windows now claims approx 3.9Gb as graphics memory with a similar amount left for programs. I will play around later with this as I use a discrete graphics card 512Mb not onboard just wondered if anyone had noticed something similar.
I put the memory in to give virtual machines a bit more headroom.

The GPU uses system RAM as well, this is the GART IIRC. I think it's where textures can be cached prior to being sent to the GPU's own onboard RAM. If you have more RAM, it can create a bigger cache.

The Graphics Address Remapping Table (GART), (sometimes known as Graphics Translation Table (GTT))[1] is an I/O memory management unit (IOMMU) used by AGP and PCI Express graphics cards, through which textures, polygon meshes and other data are loaded directly from the computer's physical memory utilizing direct memory access.
