This is pretty embarassing really as I think I've only just noticed my PC having 8GB useable in Windows when I have 12 installed in the PC.

The mobo is a Asus P6X58D and I have OcUK Value 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit RAM.

Any idea why both BIOS and Windows 7 Home (64) say only 8 is available?

I've tested all the RAM and ports they sit in and all seems ok.

Google x58 RAM problem, there is plenty of info on causes/solutions for memory channels dropping. Can't be much more help, don't have an x58 platform anymore

I lie. It appears I do have a faulty mobo, tested all the sticks in the channels and one doesn't work. Is that what you meant d brennen or is my mobo knackered?

i think biggest problem with all ram not showing x58, was bent pins on mobo 90% of time.
saw this a few times with ppl on x58.
but you seem to have found your fault, 1 stick of faulty ram

Often it is the cooler pressing down too hard on the CPU/socket. Try taking the CPU out and polishing the LGA pads with a clean lint free cloth (or kitchen towel if you're a cool kid like me) to make sure there are no conductive bits on the pads. Examine the socket for bent pins
