8GB Won't Post

Hi all,

What I hope will be a quick one but it's got me stumped.

Trying to install 8GB of memory into a P35C-DS3R (4 x 2GB). Whenever I have all 4 sticks in, the machine won't even attempt post. Everything spins up (8800GT fan stays on 100%) however no display at any point.

I've updated the BIOS (now on F10) and slackened all the memory timings however it still continues with the above.

Any suggestions would be most welcome,

Cheers

tried putting your northbridge and ram voltages up i tiny bit while you have 1 stick of ram in then putting the rest of the ram in to see if it boots?

Indeed.
+0.3 on the memory
+0.2 on the NB
It is infact fine with any combination of 2 sticks. (In any of the slots)

Will it boot with 3 sticks. (I'm actually trying to get 8gb of the PC2-8000 version running on an Abit board myself)

As it's not posting i'd consider either a slightly duff stick or a setting in the BIOS that's the issue.

Are you booting with stock settings? I'd keep everything at stock apart from nb and ram voltages and possibly up the PCI-E frequency to 110mhz.

Incidentally, will you be using Vista64 or x64?

Only reason i ask is that i noticed this in the reviews for that ram: "You must install Microsoft update KB929777 to avoid BSOD in Vista 64"

If you do get it working it may be worth booting with 4gb and checking to see if that update is needed too.

Hope you get it sorted - good luck! :)

Sticks are fine, pass memtest and I've been running in Vista x64 with both pairs.

Stock settings, PCI-E at 101 (will try 110) else you'd think to try.

Update's already on.

Cheers for the luck, think I really need it.

No probs - sounds a really wierd issue - is the F10 bios the newest?

Incidentally, i've got 8gb of OCZ PC8000 on its way.

Going in the rig in sig so i'll let you know how i get on!

I actually put the same memory in the same mobo for the Mrs' using the F4 BIOS and it worked out the box. (Newer revision of the mobo).

F10 is the newest yeah.

Actually GingerNinja1989 makes a very good point. :)

I remember needing an older bios on my old P965 DS3 to allow higher clocking and more general stability.

Might be worth a shot.

F4 BIOS tried. Didn't make a difference.

Going to try and get in touch with Gigabyte and see if they know any possible causes.

If it means anything, I had similiar problems (eventually) with the X38-DQ6 and same RAM. No post, or froze on memory size display on boot.

The only board I have had 100% no problems with 4 sticks (I've had 4x1gb previous) is the Maximus Formula.

I know the newest revision of my board works fine with 4 sticks. Hoping Gigabyte till give me an RMA now as can't think of anything it could be other than this revision of the mobo. :p

Hey ots3go,

How'd you get on with Gigabyte? Any chance of that newer revision?

Received the 2x4gb OCZ PC8000 kits today.

They're in and running @ 1:1 with the FSB at 800mhz. Got them at the stock 2.1v along with stock chipset voltages. Seems OK for now.

Will let you know if i run into any problems - vista's certainly snappy, perhaps slightly more so than it was with 4gb.
