Hi,

For the past few days now my PC has been running at 90%+ memory usage.

Here is a screenshot of the resource monitor:

It's driving me crazy!

Please help!

Looks like one or more installed programs are looking for more memory that the 8GB installed. Also the Hard Faults/sec (aka page faults is high, mine reads mainly zeros but occasionally 1 or 2).

Could be your page file size needs changing, or add more memory.

Personally, I think 8 GB should be enough for general web browsing, some gaming (but some games need more hence 16gb requirement) etc. But really you would be looking for an upgrade in near future to 16gb if you play triple AAA titles, like a lot of internet tab opened etc.

I recently upgraded to 16gb. When I had 8gb I could open only 5-7 chrome tabs before paging occurred which really slowed the system down. I looked at your processes and it doesn't add up to 8gb at all. Thus have you updated any drivers recently? I'm asking as I had a bad ethernet diver on my MSI z87gd65 in the past where it leaked causing RAM to fill up then eventually BSOD.

Lastly are you able to reinstall windows with drivers? (Just back up files beforehand). I'm assuming this is a new issue and everything was fine before? I reinstall windows every 2 years not sure if it is a placebo effect but I noticed over time windows seems to slow down as new updates are installed. Thus it might be worth trying starting clean.

Hope the above helps

Happy New Year!

Could be the Killer Network Drivers. They used to have an issue where they leaked all your memory. Try updating any killer network junk. Or just remove it all.

In fairness 8GB is not that much any more, looking at my computer now and have over 11GB in use, and this is mainly browsers and some SQL server background process.

Hi there, can you confirm what memory usage you had before you noticed it at 90% ?

Regarding the TaskMgr image provided, although I only calculated a couple of gigs for the top 10 apps running, you have a very, very long list of total apps running, so if you think, 2Gb of RAM for the daily-usage apps like web browsing + a couple of Gigs for Windows Services, you should still have betwee 40-60% free RAM Usage on a clean/decluttered system.

So the issue may be too much app-clutter, so I recommend the following steps:

PRELIMINARY STEP) Restart your PC, do not load any programs and wait a few minutes for your PC to fully load, then go to TaskMgr to see what your current RAM Usage is at idle (before you load all those apps, including memory intensive ones like Firefox...)

If it's over 70% without anything, consider either upgrading to another 8Gb Stick of RAM // or follow the steps below // or consider using less memory intensive applications, especially internet browsing (I highly recommend one called Opera Neon Browser, it's a light version of the already well-optimised browser Opera.)

Now for the steps below:

Hit the Windows key, type [msconfig] and hit Enter.
You will be given multiple options (boot/startup/services).
Start disabling any non-Microsoft/non-essential Services and limit the number of apps that load at startup.

Reset your PC (it will give you the option to "Restart Now" once you hit Apply/OK anyways).

This will help quite a bit in freeing up Memory.

Now, it is hard to tell you EXACTLY which 'Services/Apps' to disable, cuz it is your PC afterall.

STEP 1) In the MSConfig application, reorganise the 'Services' list/TAB by (Running/Disabled) so all the Running apps are on top, and the Disabled are Below.

STEP 2) Go through the list of Running apps one by one (tedious, I know..but you'll very quickly get the hand of it, I promise) and ask yourself the question (do I need this running now?) {on a sidenote if you're not sure what a specific Service does, then google the name of it and you will quickly find if it's an essential app or non-essential}.
Some will be more obvious than others, like all the Adobe Services, of which I personally never use, and if I ever were to, I would activate it only at the time I would get an error message, which I have never got for years now.

STEP 3) Reboot your PC once you've disabled the Services you no longer need (and don't forget to limit the number of apps running in the 'Boot' TAB of the MSConfig app.

FINAL STEP) Wait for your PC to load, and monitor any error messages you get (just in case you disabled a Service you actually need..but if you did, don't worry! Just reboot Windows into Safe Mode and Enable the Services causing the error, then reboot back to normal and continue the FINAL STEP), wait for your PC to load without clicking on any apps and check your memory usage compared to the first check you did before following all these steps.

See how much RAM Space you saved in total and report back here if you have any other questions.

Cheers

JoJo
