Hey guys,

I'm an Architecture student who often uses Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, AutoCAD, Revit Archticture and Adobe Illustrator.
I'm starting my Architectural Diploma soon and need to replace my old PC with a new system. In addition to the programs i use, i would like to begin work on Rhino and 3dsMax, two modelling, animation and rendering packages.

Is there anyone who can help me find computer components and specifications that would best suit my usage?

What can i get for about £900?

Hi there, welcome to the OCUK forums :D

Will the £900 just be for the base station or will you been needing any new peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc.) included in the budget.

I assume you will be needing an OS (windows 7 64 bit), but are you eligible for a discounted student version? These cost around £45, but are only upgrade copies so legally you will need a key from a previous windows system to use this version.

Finally, are there any components you can reuse from your old system? Perhaps the PSU, case, DVD drive or hard disk are worth carrying over and allowing for a higher spec system (or save some money).

your want a i7 with a nvidia gpu, with at least 6gb ram.. do you want to use same monitor keyboard and mouse?

TO BE MORE SPECIFIC...THINGS I NEED...

- NEW BASE UNIT including a Blu Ray drive, do we have Blu Ray writables yet? that would be the next big thing right?
- New case - my case atm builds up with dust inside.. so i tend to open it up and hoover inside!
- I agree, i need at least 6gb RAM
- Decent Processor!
- NEW SCREEN (about 20"?) Whats the difference bet a computer/tv screen these days ? I would eventually need a HD for blu rays right?
- Windows 7 - i hear this op system is like XP so that'll be good, Vista is ****e - ill find out if i can get student discount

I've already got my mouse and keyboard and a mediocre sound system... if i can still spend a bit more ill look for that!

Lets just say my last PC lasted me 7 years, so i would like something worth the money and that would last just as long :p

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated! :D

How does this look?

The main focus of this build was on a good screen. The Dell 2209WA is an IPS panel that will be great for your uses. The new Dell U2211H is available in some places for a similar price, this also uses an IPS panel, is slightly smaller but has a higher resolution 1920x1080. The 23in U2311H is also worth a look.

As well as this, I included Windows 7 retail and a Blu Ray player/DVD rewriter.

For the core of the system I chose an AMD Phenom II X4 - this chip is great for your uses and doesn't break the bank. I was only able to include 4GB RAM, but if you feel more is needed then going for a student discount version of Windows 7 should afford you 6GB - just make sure you can run them in Dual channel mode.

The graphics card is 9800GT, it is a reasonably modern Nvidia card - so the GPGPU stuff like CUDA and directcompute and OpenGL is supported for use with your applications.

Believe me, it is a very good screen. I assume that for the tasks being performed, a monitor with accurate colours, wide viewing angles and excellent image quality would be of high priority.

The GPU is indeed basically an 8800GTX (but is cooler and uses less power), but I wouldn't say thats a bad thing. It is only being needed to display windows the applications and assist in GPGPU tasks - for these programs I believe the vast majority of the processing is still done on the CPU. With that in mind, splashing out on a high-end graphics card doesn't seem wise - especially with a tight budget.

A Primo Crystal and this monitor would go together very nicely. It has a BluRay player as standard but not a writer, writers are still quite expensive atm.

6 Cores would come in very useful for you especially if you opt for the 8GB RAM upgrade and even an SSD! Maybe thats a little far though.

Looks rock solid, and you even added the aftermarket cooling :D

+1 for this spec.

Well just bear in mind that the hardware market is constantly evolving, if you come back to it in a few months then something completely different will be on the scene and all of the above builds will be redundant.
