Hi
I realise this is my first post but go easy on me guys because it's also my first ever build and i decided to do my research myself rather than bother you lot too much.
But now the time has come where i seem to have amassed so much information that i can't make the final decisions. This is where i hope the community's experience can come in and i can get started on my xmas build.
So here's my situation:
Primary use will be for the latest graphically demanding games like cyrsis, fallout, CoD etc but also want football manager 09 to whiz along nicely with as many small African nations selected as I so desire.
It will have to last me about a year to a year 1/2. Hopefully by that time the ridiculous price of building an i7 would have come down or amd's phenom 2 might be leading the benchmarks.
I will be overclocking the cpu and might push the ram a bit too.
I will not be using crossfire or ddr3
I have £900 to spend on the following parts. This is what i've come up with after scouring the forums for days on end:

Intel core 2 duo E8400 3.00ghz £137 (want to clock upto 3.5ghz, on offer, should have the edge over a quad in the short lifetime of the comp)

Gigabyte GA-EP45-Extreme Intel P45 £135 (on offer, great cooling, good reports in their dedicated thread in the mobo section, reliable?) I was originally looking at boards from the Asus pq5 line but i've found a number of threads mentioning repeat RMA's and how picky they are with ram, even on their qvl.

Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 golden sample 512mb £152 (supposedly best 4850) i will be gaming at 1360 x 768 on a 32" lcd tv

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 DHX PC2-6400C4DHX TwinX (2x1GB) x2 £80 This is where i really have no idea. The qvl for the gigabyte board is incredibly sparse to say the least and i came up with the corsair stuff due to the brand name and then using the memory configurator on their website. Overclockers don't sell the 2 x 2gb version but should this still be okay? Gigabyte qvl: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/MemorySupport/motherboard_memory_ga-ep45-extreme.pdf

Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502IJ) £45

Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case £76

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU £73

Thermalright TRUE Black 120 CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775) £40 ( loads of recommendations but i have no idea if this will fit on my board past all the copper)

Noctua NF-P12 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pinm x2 £30

Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7201S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter £18

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-Bit - OEM (66I-02059) £90 (i dont want to start a war over 32 vs 64bit computing but until my next build i want to stay 32 bit for my own reasons.)

Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse (910-000616) £20
Total:£897
Any changes you would make, potential problems or things i've missed? All help is very much apreciated as im going to go insane if i dont bite the bullet and order this thing soon.
I know thats quite a big spec me post but if i expect help i think i should at least let you know where im at.

The only thing that stands out to me is the RAM, buying 4x1GB is really not ideal and I'd avoid it unless you have no other choice. The 4GB (2x2) PC2-6400C5 kit is under £40 and the DHX cooling and lower latencies on the kit you chose really don't offer anything worth paying double the money for (unless you know of some specific compatibility issues, in which case I'd be looking at the 2x2GB PC2-8500 kit for another £10 or so).

PC2-6400 is fine for up to 3.6 Ghz with an E8400 but be aware that you'd have to overclock it beyond this.

I'm also wondering why you are dead-set on using 32-bit Vista, you can run 32-bit programs just fine so unless you already know some issues you'll have, it doesn't make much sense. I would strongly consider going for a Retail version of Premium (due to the price increase on OEM) which can be happily reinstalled when you upgrade PCs and flog the old one and gets a 64-bit CD for the price of postage should you decide to use it later (you can use a 64-bit install disk with a 32-bit OEM key but I'm not sure if there are any license issues involved).

E8500, for the extra 15 quid the oc'ability is worth it. £164.49
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-193-IN

Lanparty p45 - some issues with this board on the initial bios, flash to f6 and it'll outperform the other offerings from asus / gigabyte. £111.61
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-049-DF

Powercolour 4870 (Puts the 4850 to shame, for the sake of 50 quid more) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-093-PC: £199.74

4gb normal, dhx not particularly special. £38.76
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)

Tuniq tower £46.99
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-002-SB

Samsung f1 640 (bit quicker than your 500 for an extra 4 quid) £49.34
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-059-SA

Sony drive (same) £17.61
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-027-OT

Corsair hx 520 (if you could stretch to the 620 so much the better.. ideally with a psu you want to buy the best quality / capacity you can afford, the 520 is capable but the 620 would be ideal given the increasing power of systems) £72.84
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-005-CS

Antec 900 (again, if you have the extra money i'd avoid it and go for the p182. the cable management on the 900 is a big issue unless you have a lot of time on your hands, dust filters also need to be aquired separately and then fiddled with to fit in) £76.36

Windows vista x64. I refuse to post a 32bit copy of windows. Honestly don't see the point mate. You hinder yourself given that A; that its Vista and it munches through 2gig of ram on boot, and B; that the 32bit kernel won't recognize a perfectly usable 750mb of your ram. I run 64bit Vista on my Samsung Laptop, and XP x64 on my desktop. Zero compatibility issues. Admittedly there were some when i first got xp x64, but that was yonks ago. Don't see the issue unless you're using antiquated software. £89.29

Here is my revised spec after taking on on your points:

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 £211 ( the 512mb versions of this are out of stock but this still seems a lot quicker that the 4850. However, isnt it overkill for 1360 x 768)

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 - Retail (66I-02393) £140

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - £137

Gigabyte GA-EP45-Extreme Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £135 (bit dubious towards the micro board)

Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case £76 (cant really stretch the budget any further on the case. If the cable management is a nightmare is there anything else in that price range?)

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £72

Tuniq Tower 120-LFB CPU Cooler £47

Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache £50

Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB) £39 (is there any really solid 8500 ram anyone can recommend)

Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse (910-000616) £20

Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7201S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) £5

total: £950

Do you think it might be better to stick with a 4850 and spend that extra on cpu (8500 overclockability does appeal but id have to get 8500 ram aswell / better case or maybe even save it for new software.

Thanks

I think the 4870 1GB would be overkill for the screen res that you are using. Stick with the 4850 - if you really need more graphics power (which I very much doubt you will, unless you get a screen > 1920x1200) then you can always throw in another 4850 in crossfire.

The 8400 should overclock to 4Ghz nicely. The 8500 seems a bit expensive now, just a few weeks ago it was around £140.

I'd try and get the G-Skill PC2-8000C5 RAM for around £50. It's between the price of the 6400 and 8500 RAM and will give you a lot more room for larger overclocks.

I haven't heard many problems about the Asus P5Q boards. You have to remember that these are selling in huge amounts, so you will see more complaints in forums, etc.

The case is usually a very personal choice so I'll leave you to decide on that. Just try and get one with 120mm fans.

PSU is good.

I'd stick with the Thermalright 120 CPU cooler personally, I don't think the Tuniq is worth the extra.

I'm not sure what the Sony drive is like, but take a look at the Pioneer DVR-216BK drive. It's meant to be very good. It's quiet and OcUK use it in a lot of their builds.
