Hi All

Need some advise i recently built a new pc with a 9070XT Sapphire Pure and 9800x3d. Im getting strange random crashes when playing games. The screen turns black and the system is unresponsive. The only thing i can do i power the system down and back on. I have noticed the hot spot on the Card getting to 80dc. I have managed to stop the crashes if i lock the frame rate in games to 144 and the hot spot seems a lot lower around 70dc.

I have run Haven benchmark and crash very early on a few cycles in.

Also ran Cinebench for 30 mins multi core no crashes. MAX TEMP 81dc.

Running the latest drivers.

Any suggestions?

Specs below
9800X3D
9070xt Sapphire Pure
Liquid Artic freezer 360
Gigabyte Aorus pro ice X870E
32GB VIPER Elite 5 Gaming DDR5
1000W EVGA SUPERNOVA 80 PLUS GOLD

Reseat the GPU?

Reinstall all drivers

Is your PSU up to the job?

Hello

yes two individual 8pin connectors. And its version G2,
G2 was released in 2013 (I believe) so that PSU is 12 years old now. That is assuming you bought it new when first released. I'd be leaning towards replacing that with a new ATX3.1 standard PSU to help with support for modern GPUs.

yes i had it from new. I have noy bought a PSU in a long time. What recommendations would you have?
Thanks. I'd have no issues recommending the latest Antec Platinum PSUs. A good few of us here use the 1000w and 1200w versions and have been pleased with them.

1000w - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ante...-full-modular-power-supply-pow-atc-02746.html
1200w - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ante...-full-modular-power-supply-pow-atc-02747.html

I do hope that is the resolution to your issue. Blackscreens and crashing is usually a good indicator of a PSU having a hard time. Especially if you've reseated the GPU and have reinstalled drivers etc.

Maybes some other basic troubleshooting before taking the plunge - such as but not limited to:

1. Check windows is OK. SFC /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from elevated CMD prompt.
2. Check windows is up-to-date and perform an AV scan.
3. Install latest chipset and gpu drivers from AMD.
3. Update BIOS if possible
4. Ensure CPU and Memory are stable. Perhaps a run of Prime95 for an hour as a quick test. (See you have ran Cinebench without issue which is good)

It could just be unstable under boosting conditions, the binning process isn't perfect and under marginal cases they might just sell them hoping not to get too many back.

I wouldn't have thought a 1000W PSU would be insufficient. What GPU did you have previously?

Thanks Firegod all drivers are up to date and fresh windows install with all updates. Just checked and there is a new BIos but have not updated a Bios in 10 years lol bit nervous of messing it up, Will run Prime95 now to see if it passes.

@ mmj_uk, I previously ran a 6700xt and never had any crashes. It does seem strange once i look my FPS TO 144 i have no issues rock Solid. But if i play unlocked it can crash. Also temps are good around 50-60dc but the hot spot can hit 80dc..

Pointing towards a PSU issue not supplying enough watts under high fps which usually means the gpu needs more juice.

Aye, a PSU that old might not be working at full capacity any more and from what I've seen, the 9070xt can have some spiky transients - not quite at 3090 levels, but still enough to possibly trip an old PSU.

just an update run Prime 95 and was stable for 3 hours. Reset the card again and reinstalled drivers. Changes the PCI cables as i had two new ones. The card did pass two hours of Haven benchmark. The card temps were 54dc but the hot sport was still 80dc, Is this normal seems very high?
