90's internet vs modern internet

90's internet? Pah!

80's internet was where it was at!...

Those were the days! Viewdata or Scrolling? 1200/75 or 300/300 baud modem, Bulletin Boards, Prestel, Telecom Gold, the Hackers Handbook! :D

Still miss those days. Not the phone bills though.

I miss those black backgrounds with those yellow stars.

That was the thing, nearly every site you visited seem like a home made effort.

Now whats it worth, home made cakes, or the mass produced rubbish you get from tesco.

I like old:)

I miss UT and dialup.

My main problem with the internet now is that everybody is an 'expert' on anything and everything.

I could tell you, in a fair bit of detail, what happens in every book Charles Dickens ever wrote (for example). I don't have to go and read it because other people have read it, and condensed it so that I can read 20 lines and, with a bit of social nuance, present it like I am knowledgable about the text.

Unless it is high-level technical knowledge, the internet can make even the most stupid person appear intelligent.

I'm also nostalgic when it comes to the 'old' Internet. I remember saving whole web pages to read offline so I won't spend too much time (and pay by the minute) online, just to get stuck in a chat room, cybering with an American girl until the early hours :p

Good times, but prefer the polish and tech we have today. As I don't participate in social media and run every Adblocker known to man, it does still feel like the old Internet in many ways.

90's Internet - oh the memories.

- playing Doom II on networked PC's at college in 1995

- online multiplayer gaming on the BT Wireplay service when the only game was EF2000 flight sim.(Jan 1997)
Later getting totally addicted to Total Annihilation RTS - online comps etc (1998/99)

- using a USR 33.6k modem for about 3 years with Internet bills of £400 per quarter. (Phone bill and ISP service costs)

- getting ADSL (BT Openworld) in early 2000 with super fast speeds of 512k and always connected. pings of low 30's

- clan wars on Unreal Tournament. Many late nights / early mornings messing about on this. I've still got screenshots of Godlikes on 30+ player games. (1999-2002)
