I currently have a X2 3800+ thats been running stable at 2.8ghz for years.

Would it be worth getting something like an FX55, 60 or opteron 185? I saw an FX55 got for £13 on here recently.

Not looking to move to Core 2 duo as its not needed

Go for broke and upgrade to i7 tbh. No point in a half assed upgrade to c2d unless you are tight on money.

I think the FX55 was a single core 2.6 chip, the Opteron and FX60 were Dual core (think the multi is unlocked on the FX chips).
Unless you could get a guaranteed clocker quite cheep, I wouldn't bother.

I've got a old 939s hanging around somewhere think its a 4200+ or 4400+ X2 runs most things with ease, but cant sell it through here and I think the for sale section on OcUK forums has disappeared.

If you don't need ultra gaming machine then I think little upgrades are worth it compltly.

Would it be worth ugrading to 4400+ ? If the cache is the same and i run my 3800+ at 2.8ghz theres no point in upgrading to 4400+ if it can only do 2.8ghz or below

edit - ive heard people taking the tops (heatspreader?) off their cpus to get more mhz out. Is this a good idea?

Upgrading a high clocked 939 chip is not a good plan really... You'll have the chance to gain an extra 512k cache but there's always the chance you wont get as good a clock.
I don't think you'll get a performance boost worth the trouble. :)

the only upgrade i've ever regretted was opteron 146 to opteron 175

just sell or keep your kit and get a Qxxxx + ddr2 kit mate :)

Moved from x2 3800 (@2.6)to an Opteron 185(@2.7/8'ish).- was an o'k upgrade but cost me best part of £2OO :( (it wasn't worth it ! Only a small Performance increase)

Moved to a core 2 duo (e8400) - now that is what I call an upgrade :D

O'K the cost of the move to core duo was best part of £300 but it was worth it.
and I would have no hesitation on recomending such an upgrade even if s775 is now 'old' tech. etc

Overall I would not bother 'upgrading' s939 (unless VERY cheap !!) better to save your pennies and go for the full monty of a move to Core 2/ i7/Amd Phenom 2 :D (with luck you will be able to sell existing cpu+m-board+ram for decent money; I did when I moved to core 2 :))
