939 Dual Core 4200's, do these overclock well (doing couple of partial upgrades from old AGP over to PCI for family PC's), my PC's 4800+ sits happy at 3Ghz - so just wonderd if 2.7 or better is realistic with 4200's?

Advice welcome. :D

The later CPU's on the shelves right now are Toledo's (512kb cache is cut) with the LCB9E stepping. They seem to be good for 2.6-2.7GHz guaranteed and as high as 2.9GHz :)

If you do go for one you might want to choose a top of the line air cooler as from my experience you need a lot better than the likes of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro for 2.7GHz or more even when running it at stock volts. Heat saturatation becomes a problem otherwise. I've a Big Typhoon and that screenshot shows 65c was the highest for one core but if I was still using the Freezer 64 Pro it'd be more like 75-80c.

My CPU is good for up to around 65c so I wasn't too concerned when it was running Orthos at that temp but I'll be improving the airflow in the case to help bring it down to a more acceptable temp. :)

Lol yeah i could'nt agree more, i got flamed on this very forum a while back for suggesting ACF64 is rubbish for dual core, even after using one and seeing duff temps (soon replaced with Infinity, job done). Scythe Mines x2 on stanby for the builds im doing so should be fine. :)

Got mine last week and is on 3Ghz on stock volts at 275FSB. I have a Zalman Aero Flower on mine and temps while running orthos peak at 51 degrees. Normal running during games is about 40 Degrees.

Can you do a screenshot showing CPU-Z, Orthos running for a bit and NextSensor so I can see the other temps in your system?

EDIT: Also is your X2 4200+ a LCB9E or LCBKE or something else?

STR, I assume your on air, what temps are you load & Idle? Is it prime stable at 3ghz, any weird blue screens etc. I am very tempted.

Cheers Gunner

I got my X2 4200+ from a competitor. For 3GHz it needs vcore set to 1.35v + 113% (works out at ~1.52v although it shows as 1.472 in CPU-Z) to get it 9 hours Orthos stable. I accidentally bumped into the base unit while it was sitting on top of another and knocked it on the floor or I'd have let it run longer. Fortunately nothing broke.

The idle core temps is ~30c/35c and Orthos max is 65c although that's with the heating on making the room very warm and without much in the way of good airflow in the case so I should be able to bring it down a bit.

When I first tried 3GHz the system would freeze in Windows while running Orthos regardless of volts but I was pretty sure it was memory settings related as relaxing to 2T helped it. I've since tweaked the the DFI NF4 Ultra-D bios memory settings and it runs 1T no problem and when it fails Orthos due to not enough vcore it doesn't freeze anymore it just says there has been an error.

So it's looking good for 3GHz just need to get the temps down a bit and check it properly by running Orthos for 24 hours.
