I have:

FX-53 (939 pin).
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
2GB Geil XMS3200
WD Caviar 7200rpm, 8mb cache.

Considering this bundle:

Intel Dual Core E6600
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
2GB G-Skill PC2 6400C4
+ 150gig WD Raptor.

This bundle seems to be good value for money and it looks like the E6600 clocks well (can you recommend me a cooler or is the stock one good enough).

Can I expect to see a real world boost with this set up. I will be keeping my BFG 7800 GTX OC for now.

It will be better if you overclock it but not by a vast amount. The hard drive will improve loading installations etc by a helluva lot, but this will probably be the greatest improvement as the FX53s aren't far behind the E6600s.

Get a P35 chipset mobo.

That 6600 if clocked to 3.4ghz will destroy that FX 53.

Expand on this please m8? And which would you recommend and why
Thanks.

Better chipset than the old 975.

Better clocks
cooler running
supports the new up and coming 45nm Cpu's
nicely priced

Abit P35
Asus P5k

 a clocked cd2 will be faster in everything. apples and apples, come on. my e6600 is massively faster in everything. encoding...everything. my e6600 is a hell of a lot faster than my opteron 148 @3ghz was.

A clocked FX53 compared to a stock C2D won't be far behind in, for example, games that don't specifcally use 2 cores.

Read the opening post.

The guy is overclocking his 6600.

So who is comparing an overclocked FX 53 with a stock 6600?

Your post does not make any sense.

Great thanks. I have a Lian Li V2000 case. Would the motherboard heat pipes be a problem. The mobo goes in upside down in this case? Also do these motherboards have an ide connection and wi-fi.

Ok OP ignore my comments. Was just trying to give you an idea that it might not give you £500 worth of improvement but as they say it'll be much faster.

The P5K deluxe is wifi and they have a IDE

So have I made a mistake going for a 680i based board (Striker Extreme) at this moment in time? Purchased 4GB of Dominator to go with it!

Again, it comes down to the 'when is the best time to upgrade?' eternal question and I have been out of the Core 2 Duo game for too long :)

If you need SLI then no...

If you don't need SLI there are better mobos out there that are cheaper and clock better.

The best tinme to upgrade is when your current pc is not running your tasks/games/applicationss at a reasonable speed and your not happy with the performance your computer is giving you.

Quite true I suppose. I have an AMD 4000+ at the moment so I'm expecting quite an increase. I hope the 'proper' quad CPU's aren't far faster though otherwise I have made a mistake. I am assuming these will not be supported on this board.

Or when you need to dispose of some cash before the Mrs heads off to New Look/ Primark!
