Hey, I am considering building a new computer, but am unsure on what socket too choose.

Obviously i'd like to go AM2, but the only thing that deters me is that I have 1.5gig's of DDR RAM that will go to total waste, and also i'd have to shell out an extra £100 on 2 gig's of DDR2 RAM.

Or could I get by with 1 gig of DDR2?

Personally I'd say go Conroe (and I'm an AMD fan!). Don't forget you can sell your old RAM to cover some of the cost of the new stuff.

Yeah, I could sell one of the gig's I guess.

Just to check, I won't be able to use my DDR RAM will I?

Yeah, i'd like to go Conroe, but with the huge delays and the apparent lack of decent boards, I think AM2 is the way for me.

Or build a stopgap cheap as chips 939 system for about the same price as a Conroe chip on its own.

Eg circa £60 for a 3200 that cost £120 a few months ago or £90 for a 3700 San Diego that cost £180 not long ago. Granted Conroe probably chews them up and spits them out but the savings could go toward a better graphics card which may be more important with loads of games (assuming you're a gamer) being graphics limited rather than cpu limited.

Also loads of 939 boards going cheap with AM2 and now Conroe out.

My descision is to get a 7300GT which will do me fine till DX10.

I will probably go AM2, considering that their is a new AMD chip out next year which is supposed to be good i guess; and getting an AM2 board now would prevent my from having to replace it in the future.
