Not really paid much attention to my temps in the past, since I've never OC'd and my PC has been stable. I'm on a 939 x2 4800 Toledo core at the moment, on an Asus A8N-SLI Premium board (passive cooled), and I've got 2 queries now that I've fired up Everest. I should add that Cool n Quiet IS enabled, and I'm not a total tech novice, just completely new to the black art of timings and anything related to overclocking etc really :).

1) I've got 4x512mb of Corsair PC3200 RAM (XMS if I remember right?). Now Everest reports that at 200Mhz, they can run at timings of 3.0-3-3-8. At 166 they can run at timings of 2.5-3-3-7. Under current chipset properties in Everest, it lists them as running at 2.5-3-3-7. Does this mean I'm actually not running my memory at its potential speed? CPU FSB is listed as 200Mhz, and Memory bus at 160Mhz.

2) The other query is regarding temps. I've just beasted my system with a few Prime95 sessions, and some idle sessions, and collected the results. Each was allowed 20-30min to stabilise the readings.

I've got an Enermax Noisetaker PSU, and 4 Sharkoon SL3 fans with controllers (80mm). When in silent these are all turned down to low, when at full, they are all maxed. Illustration of layout here.

Mobo/CPU
46 51 idle silent
42 48 idle full

43 62 full full
46 64 full silent

I know I've just got standard cooling etc in there, and the load temps don't seem to bad to me, but I can't help thinking that 50 degrees idle seems a bit out of line?

Grateful for any replies to the above, thanks guys.

mine runs @ stock 39 idel and 50 load with artic cooler pro. When i had it at 2.6 it run 62 load.
they do run hot, they basicly 2 4000+

My Opteron 180 (pretty much the same chip) runs at 31c idle with a mild overclock to 2520Mhz.

Elmuzzy, I have pretty much exactly the same setup as you. :p

AMD Opteron 180
Asus A8N-SLI
Corsair XMS3500LL TWINX
Seasonic S12 500W
Zotac 8800GT-SLI

I assume your chip is the same/comparable core as my 5600 X2.
If so, as far as I can tell, it starts to make calculation errors at about 55 degrees, so it should be fairly happy in the mid 40's

Well I bit the bullet after getting hold of a spec sheet for my RAM modules, and have manually forced that to what it should be at - 400Mhz, 2.5-3-3-6 with 2T command rate.

I've never had any problems with stability, so I'm not worried about temps in that regard, it's just that I'd expect a lower idle temp than 51, and also a bigger difference between idle and full load temps.

first thing id do would be to completely clean out your case
once cleaned remove and replace the TIM on your CPU
also you need to look at managing you cables a bit better to get better airflow
i run a 4400x2 clocked to 2.5Ghz my idle temps around 31c and load temps are around 49c my mobo chipset runs at 40c-42c
looking at you pic you seem to be using amd's hsf id change that for a arctic cooling freezer pro £14 well spent

Edit:
your load temps on the the cpu are very close to the CPU's threshold

Agree with sir-les. Time for a rebuild.

I had a 4200+ x2 clocked to 3Ghz and my idle temps were 30ish and 50ish under load.

I wasn't happy (and neither was the cpu!) when it went any higher.

I am quite amazed your cpu is stable at 64 degrees?????

Anyway your idle temps of 42 to 46 degrees is just way too high. Unless you are putting huge volts through your cpu, you should be in the low 30's at idle.

It's been hot the last few days, more reasonable today, CPU idling at 44/45 with fans at full, still not ideal. I'll give it a good clean later, but it was only done a couple of weeks ago, so if that's the problem, I need to address the issue of filters on my case.

I realise what you're saying with the cabling, but it looks worse than it is - I have it over the outside struts to keep it clear, so there's a perfectly unobstructed channel all the way through the middle of the case for airflow.

I've never had this PC crash/hang regularly in the (3?) years I've been running it, it's been a solid little machine :).

I'll dig out the hoover now and give the CPU heatsink a good clean, see what it comes back as :). Back in a bit, cheers guys!

Ok, Just had as good a clean as I can (blocked off half the HS, pinned the fan, stuck a hoover on it), and now I'm idling at 40/41 at full fan speeds. I'm just wondering, you guys that say you can idle at 30, is that with aftermarket coolers and with Cool n Quiet turned off? I just say that because Cool n Quiet is turned on (I like a quiet PC most of the time, it's just gaming when I'll tolerate noise) and my CPU fan is only therefore running at about 1600rpm at the moment.

check with cpuz, might well be C+Q isnt working, even tho its enabled (you should see 5*200 or 6*200 (1000/1200mhz) with 1.1V. if its 12*200 @ 1.35-1.45v its not working.

Thanks Amonlym, I've just done as you said, and it would appear it's not working - Core of 2412Mhz, Multipler x12, Bus 200Mhz, HT Link 1000Mhz, voltage 1.344V.

I'll strip all my Windows drivers off and try putting them back on, see if that's where the problem lies.

Aha! Reinstalled drivers, that didn't help, then did a bit of Googling based on what you'd said, and found that I had to ensure it was set to Minimal Power Management in the XP Power Options. Done that, and hey presto, it's at x5, 1.1V. I'll post temps in a little while when things have stabilised...I'm feeling hopeful.... Many thanks! :)

Idling at 35 now :). Many thanks to all! I'm hoping to upgrade completely in a month or so, but I've bookmarked the heatsink suggestion from sir-les-mp (many thanks) in case I don't go ahead with a full upgrade.

Really appreciate all the help I've got in this thread, thanks guys :)
