I currently have an intenl i5 spec in mind, but would like to see what an AMD alternative could give me. Baring in mind i would like to have a really good base hardware to build upon, i.e. motherboard/ram/cpu. To do some nice overclocking with.

I5spec is

Will be selling some old hardware for about £100 and vat being paid by a 3rd party so i have about £900-950 to play with. Will be gaming mostly and some ever so slight bit of encoding.

Case Lian- Li V2000 and psu is 520w corsair. Thanks for the help :)

For an AMD based build I would look at getting a Phenom II X4 955BE:

I would also look at this AMD motherboard too:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-366-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

It does symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X.

On OcUK the cheapest P55 motherboard to be able to do this is over £130.

I would sell the HX520W and get a PSU like the following:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-117-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

You could add another HD5870 1GB in the future if required.

Thanks for the help CAT-THE-FIFTH, think il go down the AMD route. Would the Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 be just as good as that Asus? Just seem to have some more substatial cooling?

And would my 520w psu be completely inadequate for those parts btw?Would prefer to save up for a monitor/gpu/ssd etc + 750w psu in a month or two.
