Hi guys,

I have a 955 running at stock, never overclocked. We've had a few warm days recently and suddenly my stock CPU fan has become really loud. I checked the temps and each core is at around 62c idle, is this too hot?

Ok I just checked using HWMonitor and TMPIN1 is 57c and was at 63c max value earlier.

I couldn't see CPUTIN from the latest HWmonitor version I downloaded.

Thanks

Sorry I don't have TMPIN 1 on my list, its lists CPU, SB, NB then on another line it lists all of the cores.

I would think that a side fan blowing air air would be better (it would cool the motherboard down better. What case do you have?

With a standard AMD cooler a side fan may help since I'm pretty sure the stock fan blows air down onto the CPU.

If you added a bigger heatpipe cooler though with the fan facing out of the top then a side fan will most likely upset the airflow.

Download 'Everest' and monitor the CPU temp only (core temps are wrong).

Those temps look too high, especially if that's idle temps. Those sort of temps should be max load temps really for a Phenom II and even then you want to aim for lower. Might be worth cleaning off the heatsink/CPU applying new thermal compound and re-seating it, make sure nothing is obstructing the fan on the heatsink and that it's firmly seated against the CPU - shouldn't be a problem with stock cooler as the retention bracket holds it pretty firmly but just make sure.

Ok, so i just went to open up the computer to reseat the heatsink and fan and the fan on the heatsink wasn't moving! It seems to stopping and starting, what the hell could be causing that?

It's working at the moment, but I am just coming on quickly to order a new cpu fan, anyone recommend anything cheapish? I don't OC or anything, just something basic and fairly quiet, thanks!

I'm such an idiot, sorry guys. I figured out what the problem was. My brother was using the computer the other day and it turns out he installed SETI@Home, which had been running in the background 24/7:mad:

But would that have caused the fan to stop?

Uninstalling the program has certainly sorted out the temps now, it's idling at 35c now.
