Hey there

So I should be getting a 9600GT 512MB soon as an upgrade from a HD3850 256MB. But the thing I am wondering is, howcome the HD3850 has 320 stream processors and the 9600GT only has 64? And will this make a big difference? Will I see a noticable upgrade in game performance at 1280x1024 when I move from my HD3850 to the 9600GT?

Thanks for your help and time.

The 3850 actually only has 64 stream processors like the 9600GT. However, unlike the 9600, the ATi stream processors can do up to 5 jobs at the same time, giving a theoretical 320 stream processors. The tech is not as mature and Nvidia's tech however, which means that the 9600GT is faster. The 4850 which will be released in several weeks time will be an evolution on the tech.

i would personally still go for the nvidea! on papaer it may seem like it is the weaker of the two but in practise it is the 9600gt that excels expect 3dmark scores of around mid 12 thousands at stock, and fps in games such as world in conflict, quake wars to average out at around 50! and crysis to be just hitting the 40's (of course this is deependant on other componenets! assuming you have at leat 2gig ram, q6600 n all that)

imh opinion though id got for an 8800gtx or gt whichever same if not better results.

BFG 8800GTX OC2 is still one of the fatest cards out there (ultras included) and quite cheap now too!
