9600GT vs a 8800GT ?

From what I've seen the main difference is on spec and price. Comparing my friends' setups of a zotac 9600gt and a generic 8800gt with very similar systems, there's bugger all difference on everything but Crysis, where the 8800 pulled ahead marginally.

Friends' systems:
Gigabyte DS4 p35
e2180 - -> 3.0ghz
4gb ocz pc2-6400 c4
9600gt (Crysis @ 1650x1080 on a Samsung 24")
Vista 64

Foxconn p35
e2200 - -> 3.0ghz
2gb corsair pc2-6400 c4
8800gt (Crysis @ 1650x1080 on a Hyundai 24")
Vista 32

It will

You have already been told once in another thread.

But i was just after what card he has used.
The bit below was making me think more about what card as i dont want to spend then find out it does not work in my PC

Below says that a v1 card will be ok in a v2 slot but sounds like some v2 cards work some dont in a v1 slot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express
PCIe 2.0 is backward and forward compatible with PCIe v1.x. Graphic cards and motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with v1.1 and v1.0, and vice versa. In some rare cases it is possible that a PCI-E 2.0 card will not work correctly on a PCI-E 1.0a slot. This is only limited to certain video cards.
