I'm sure i'm loved in this section today! My brother has a 970, windforce or the G1 gaming i think?

How do they run at 1440p? My nan is looking to get him a new monitor for xmas and he is worried how it's going to run, we've watched a few benchmark videos etc and on ultra with the games he plays seems to be putting him around the 40/45 fps mark.

I was wondering if anyone here actually has the same set up and could comment first hand? He is a little worried about turning down settings.

She's wanting to spend around £250, which I don't think will get him far. He's currently got a 22" 1080p TV. These are the only two in the price range that look decent and seem to be alright in the spec. He plays a lot so I said 144hz would be great but he used mine for about 3 minutes and didn't see the difference on a really slow paced game.

This is what I'm trying to explain to him, he doesn't seem to get it. But with the higher resolution it should look better than 1080p at ultra, right?

I really wish we had a PC shop round here we could go to and have a play with different monitors etc.

Question is, which games will he be playing the most?

Impossible to say if a 970 will be sufficient as everyone has different tastes. And with there being so many options on PC, it really depends on what he will be doing.

Games like DOTA2 for example, don't require huge amounts of grunt. Most games from 2014 earlier should be runnable at max or at nearly max. More recent games would struggle, but some recent releases have atrocious performance (relatively speaking) even for 980Tis.

I have a 970 at present, at 1440p and it is working perfectly well. I am not however, playing the latest and greatest, and if I really wanted total maxing out of all games, the 980Ti would be the only realistic option. Ask again in 6 months, and it is very likely that the 980Ti will be superseded by something else, and so on and so forth ad infinitum...

His brother can't tell the difference between a 1080p TV and 144Hz!:p

Install GF Experience and let it configure his game settings for 1440p with his 970.

A 970 will play 1440p well with settings to suit.

I game atm with Gigabyte Xtreme GTX970 on a Asus Swift G-Sync 1440p monitor and it plays all games just fine. I would say only a hand full of the AAA games might need settings turned down a little. Other then that it runs most on ultra with no stutter and smooth fps.

I can run most games at max settings on my 970. Mad max, fallout 4, skyrim, dirt rally etc but will upgrade in the future to keep it this way.

He plays everything from AAA to crap like CS:GO.

Awesome. Christmas present sorted then!

Which one of them two would you go for?

Crap like csgo!?!?! Yeah it is pretty crap isn't it.

Depends on what colour monitor he wants aswell, have you looked at the ultra wide LG monitors?

Might help with games aswell being 2560x1080 not 1440
