970 or 980 reference for 1440p...?

I'm very heavily leaning down the reference route as I have an H440 case and plan to go SLI in the future, so the blower design would seem to be best suited. I am struggling to decide between the the 970 and 980 though. The test results I saw here seemed to put the 980 quite a bit further ahead than I thought, at least it seems so... but in real world terms maybe not. I will be running at 1440p with an i7 4790k and 16Gb RAM. Is the 970 the smarter choice, or is the 980 worth the extra £100 or so?

I'm very happy with my GTX 970 SLI setup for 1600p but if you can afford to go for the GTX 980 and add another in the future then that's obviously preferable.

That said, I opted for two cards now rather than going for the GTX 980 and adding another in the future. I'm glad I did, as there are games that push my rig (Crysis 3, Assassin's Creed: Unity, Star Citizen). It's a huge step up from the GTX 680 SLI setup I had before.

I do wonder though if the OCUK 970 reference cards will hold their value better seeing as they are the only ones you can get. That may change of course however.
