this 970 isn't working well in SLI:-

1...........it's crashing quite often (blue screen) every day about 3 times
2...........it's defaulting back to one card only in Nvidia control panel, it returns to one card only every night.... you have to keep a close eye on it.

if this continues i'll sell the 2nd card and keep the single card for now, but replace it with the biggest single card from next year

Remove any overclocks you are running (CPU, GPU, RAM) etc and see if this helps with stability.

If it no longer crashes/blue screens etc then it was your overclock which was the issue.

it does it really badly in Daz 3d, if you're rendering complicated images

``Daz is not working to reduce the load on your pc``........ it's bad in FC4 and sometimes in Metro

i will reduce the overclock tomorrow, i thought it might be this

Do both cards work perfectly well when on there own?

yes, but it's always been crashing but not as bad as SLI, but what's annoying is seeing it default back to one card in use only, it hasn't done it tonight so maybe FC4 did this

i've reduced the OC by a long way so lets see what happens tomorrow

Try putting the cards back to stock speeds and see if that helps. Also when the cards are on there own do they both crash? Have you tried removing the drivers and putting a fresh one on also?

As mentioned above, possibly an unstable cpu oc. What's the bsod code your getting. Tbh you don't need a big 4.8ghz cpu clock for 2 cards in sli. I've had no issues with stock speed on a 4790k. Much cooler too as my cpu isn't delidded.

yes, it's fine in benchmark but the cards get noisy whilst rendering 3D Graphics ( DAZ 3D) ......it strains the pc/ memory far more than gaming, it takes about 45 seconds to render

I wont know what it is until later Tonight after doing loads of 3D

what i have noticed is even when SLI is working in Nvidia, that the top card is always hot...bottom card cold, but both are deffo running/hot in Heaven, i dont think they work in Daz

The top card is always going to be hotter than the bottom card mate. When I have used SLI in the past there has been as much as 20 degrees difference at times because of the airflow difference. Hope you can get some answers tonight, would really annoy me that.

I sent my 980 back and went 970 SLI. First time ever I have done SLI and so far I am well pleased and happy I did. Mainly for 4k gaming. I've generally got a 50% boost and I am slowly going through my stockpile of games and so far not had any problems.

Only thing I am not sure about is I went for reference Galax cards because I did think this would be better than custom cooled cards but they do get a bit noisy under load but as I wear headphones I cant hear them. The other consideration was watercooling I fancied a dabble again. Just got to decide whether to do a self mod (done it already to a 580), AC Hyrbid II (prob wont fit), or proper loop.

That is encouraging thank you for the insight and perspective must admit I haven't really considered 4K gaming as didn't think 970 SLI would be enough for it.

SLI is holding stable..........if it's rendering 3D ok then it'll be fine for gaming, it takes about 45 seconds for a full render...........

next year no SLI, just a really big single card..the biggest i can get.

when i say with SLI working that the lower is colder..... it's totally cold, no fans spinning...in comparison the upper card is screaming !!!! i dont think it's working in SLI with DAZ 3D, but both cards are deffo working in Heaven/gaming, so that's ok

this card isn't perfect for 3d graphics/animation at full pixel count/ shaders and textures, it probably doesn't have enough RAM, because the stress on the PC whilst rendering is massive, about the same as Prime.

i want this gaming rig to be a full on 3D workstation, so the cards might need far more wallop than this

luckily i dont need to render that often, because the pc is fine with animated movement, it'll do 4 people running around easily and it looks damned realistic too.

yes deffo, because on max 1080p settings with everything turned right up............EVERYTHING.... the GTX 970 only just handles a modern shooter, it's far better in SLI of course, but 1080p is way short of full fat 4K.

I think the reason is yu have two cards exactly matched.

I still never got an answer on gpu bios levels. it is a massive disaster . and a big pitfall for buy one and another later strategy.

yea the 980 is no good, it's not powerful enough, because you'd be looking for a single card next year with at least 50% more grunt and at least 8K mem

if that's possible :eek:.....i doubt it, more like 15 to 20%

I dont know how to look for that m8, sorry..... but their settings look the same on MSI AB.......................but they're deffo working whilst gaming.

my guess is that SLI was either turned off by all the latest drivers, or by all the FAR CRY 4 crashes i've had
