So i part read the mega thrad about the 970 issues and I bought mine from OcUK right at the end of December last year, and I think the TL:DR i got was, OcUK will refund me if i send it back ?

I play at 1440p so I think I'm more likely to suffer from problems later down the line ?

My question is, is it worth paying the extra money to get a 980 ? I can afford it, and I'm not sure I want a really hot 290. Not sure if it matters but I'm using an Ivybridge i7 @ 3.5GHz.

So if a 980 for about ~£100 more is sensible, then which one ? there's so many :E

something like this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-042-IN&tool=3 ?

personnaly yes go for a 980 you wont regret it.

the 290's still put out too much heat and is a downgrade for a 970.

I would stick to the gigabyte or EVGA ones

thanks for the replies, I think I will go with that KFA2 one you linked.

I stuck in an RMA enquiry, I think that's the right way to go about returning it ? Do you know if I get store credit or an actual money refund ? I was going to stick the 980 on my credit card, but if its store credit then I'll wait until the 970 is back with OcUK

You will get a refund it tells you that from a link in the first post of that humongous thread.

I am thinking about doing the same as you but it will cost around £120 for about 15% or so difference....

....but if you do not get the postage refunded on sending your card back (£12 to £15) then you have to add that into the mix as well.

Still deliberating as yet.

That KAF2 will go back up in price later this week, or when stocks run out.

It has been in and out of my basket all weekend :(

I am just not that sure as the 970GTX is still a superb card.

I think for an extra £100 the GTX 980 is definitely worth it. The whole 970 memory fiasco has made the GTX 980 a more compelling offer in terms of value for money.

I personally am looking at the Strix 980 from a Strix 970. Passive cooling is a game changer. My PC is virtually silent when idle/browsing/playing games like League of Legends. I could never go back to non passive cooling cards now.

Yhea massive gz to OC for swapping/refunding the cards i have spent a fair penny over the last 18 months with um and I will be spending a lot more in teh future after this decision. I am so annoyed with this as I have the ROG Swift so going AMD is just a no no for me

But to get the most out of the swift am I right in thinking that I will need 2 980's to get over 120+ fps? if so thats another £200 on the bill and I am betting we wont see 8 gig 980's till Q2 at the earliest which will be was past the chance of swapping the cards with OC.

are you sure its worth it? It still only has 4GB so will start to struggle in another 5-8 months. Wouldnt it better to buy an 8GB card or wait for the next iterations from AMD and Nvidia?

I've yet to see many people complain about actual problems with a single 970 though... the issues seem to be with SLI more than anything. I get the sense a single card is going to run out of puff before you really start pushing that 4GB limit anyway (in the few games that use it)... and once you hit 4GB, a 980 won't fair much better, SLI or not. The better future proofing route is the 290X 8GB in Crossfire, if your case/PSU can handle it. I don't see the 980 making a great deal of fiscal sense if you're eyeing up a future 8GB card anyway, especially if you got two of them. Keep in mind the 980 is about a 15-20% jump in performance at best, but with a cost difference of at least 35%, in some cases much more than that. I don't see the argument for the 980 is that strong given at the end of the day it's still a 4GB and arguably has a lifespan not THAT much longer than the 970.

That's not true if you're talking about an X-Fire setup with the 8GB versions (even 4GB X-Fire would have the edge over 970 SLI, as at least they are using the full 4GB VRAM). Single card, like for like, there's not much point though, best off keeping a 970.

Yhea I know thats the problem I would have got 2 290 8mb but then I lose the gysnc on the swift and I dont want to lose that cause its so dam good. If i had know about the memory problems with sli I would have held of till freesync came out............

It just by keeping these now I lose the £600 credit dam nvidia for not having 8 mb cards out!!!

I can see me sticking tbh with the 970's till the next 8mb card from nvidia comes out its just bloody annoying cause I have a bad feeling the 970's resale rate will be bloody low after this debacle.

That is my sort of dilemma. This is an opportunity for people to get the cash they paid for their 970 and then by another card for whatever their own reasons, no questions asked.
If AMD had released their next gen cards and NVidia already had a Ti (or whatever) version of their 980 with 8GB on the market now then I might be able to make more sense of changing, albeit it would then be more than £140ish.
I now game at 1440p and I'm not sure if a 4GB 980 will be worth that much money over a 4GB 970 but, as I have said, it has been in and out of my basket all weekend..!

Framerate wise there doesn't seem much in it between the 980 and 970 for the money difference, but then again it has always been like that.

Hard to say, I think they will still sell at a decent price, not least because I think you'd be surprised how few PC users actually know (or care) about this issue. And for a single card up to 1080p, they'll be strong performers for some time, and the majority of gamers are still playing at that res. This forum can give a skewed perspective sometimes I think, and you can almost get the impression EVERYONE is at 4K lol, but that couldn't be further from the truth!

Obviously though, they'll never be worth as much as you could get if you return them by the end of February... full price! Damned if you do, damned if you don't though, as there is no other card that stands out. Personally, I'd lean towards X-Fire 290X 8GB, simply because I think these cards will hold their value pretty well (given the memory and future proofing), and will last you long enough to sit back and wait to see what AMD/Nvidia come out with in the next year or so.

Yeah, I agree with the guys above. You are better off going for a 290X 8GB, because the vram will no longer be a factor in being future proof. If you're wanting performance to match your SLI setup, then crossfire 290X's is probably the best solution, or even a 295X2 (which is what I intend to get)

The 8GB 290X's are superb cards. If it wasn't for all the hassle of changing my 4GB 290X's to them I'd probably swap them out. :)
