I'm currently thinking about buying either a Asus GTX 970 OC Strix or a Zotac GTX 780TI GHZ Edition, both are available for essentially the same price.

My question is apart from lower power draw is there any reason not to go for the 780ti?

Or is it worth sticking with my 7970 for now and wait for the new cards to come out.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Cheers.

I would go for the 970 out of the two. similar performance (780 ti might be slightly faster when both overclocked) but 4 gb ram lower power and lower heat would override that for me.

ok 780ti GHz ed vs 970 oc reasons not to get the 780ti.

Older tech.
Less memory.
Less likely to get driver performance improvements due to being older tech.
More power usage. ( you already mentioned that)
probably more heat output.

the 780ti will probably slightly faster now, but the drivers will only improve the 970 where as the 780ti might not.

I think it makes more sense to get the 970. You get more ram, less heat and generally better efficiency. Plus, most of these cards clock like crazy. I was able to take mine to 1516mhz on stock volts, at which clock I believe it has the 780ti beat in many scenarios. And the best part is such freqs are not exactly uncommon among 970 owners;p

..the only reason you'd really buy a 780Ti now is if you already had one and wanted a relatively cheap 2nd one for SLI.

Gibbo posted a thread showing the ti pretty much smashing the 970 at everything, so do your own research before following the 970 cultists.

So you are advocating doing your own research by following someone else's advice ;), kind of a contradiction in itself, but fair enough.

Would you have a link to that thread that Gibbo posted please.

Also to the opening poster, are you planning to overclock as that can make a big difference to the end performance of both the 970 and 780ti, (meaning performance at stock might be very different but both overclocked very similar.)

thing is the rez matters a lot and there are many gaming benchmarks which show the 970 gtx infront of the 780 ti in many. do your research.

gibbo will have a lot of stock to shift ;)

new drivers for the newer 970 gtx will also give it a bit more of a boost so i think at very worst with mature drivers level with a 780 ti and faster most of time.

Yes it is, untill you need more ram than 3Gb's. Then mega slowdown.

Simple as that really.

If you only need 3GB and the 780ti is a sweet price, then worth it.

If you need more than 3GB then the 970 is the obvious choice.

Looks like my card has coil/cap whine, its audible when you're in game with low volume (night)

I've just been reading through the threads about this issue, I'm thinking if placing another order was a bad idea (just in case its the same)
