I have a Asus Z390 motherboard and need a new CPU (long story). This will primarily be used for gaming.

Brand new - I can get a 9700K for £230 or a 9900 (non-K) for £250.

My presumption is that the i9 will be a safer bet in the longer term. I reckon that the £20 extra for hyper-threading beats the ability of the i7 to overclock.

Agree?

If the 9700 and 9900 are going that cheap now, I'm half tempted to snag the former and do the BIOS mod for my Maximus VIII Impact. Double the cores of my 6700K? Yes please!

I think I got lucky. They were going for that price for around 24-48 hours in The Rainforest, so I decided my Z390 was never gonna get a better value chip.

I'd go for it - when a gen or two behind, prices seem to drop when still available at retail... but once all gone, I suspect used values will stay strong for some time.
