Had my secondary rig connected up to my Dell2407 via VGA just now (Dual 2.6GHz Xeons, gig of ram and a 9700pro) and the screen flickers quite badly.

Is this a problem caused by the graphics card not really having enough grunt to support this resolution? or some sort of other issue?

If its a hardware problem, I'm on the hunt for a AGP card that will support this resolution without issue, doesn't need to be a gaming card, since I only use that rig for rendering on 3dsmax and hosting game servers.

9700pro should handle that res no problems, gaming may be a little on the stuttery side but general use should be ok

I had a 9700pro b4 i went to the x800 series and so on, was the best card ever for quite awhile, soz but i also have no idea what the problem is :(

Yeh I use it solely as a display card.
Its just the flickering on desktop and all normal desktop based programs that is annoying me.
Will try some different spare graphics cards over xmas when I'm back home but I'll be hoping for some sort of explanation here, I would have thought the card would either display it without problem, or not work at all :/

It looks a bit like a CRT at 60Hz, literally just a flicker.
I used to get it occasionaly on my old monitor at certain refresh rates. Ie the monitor was normally best at 60, but this card flickered at 60, and was fine at 72 and 75Hz

Have you tried setting it to a standard res like 1024x768 or 1600x1200?

Are you using the DVI connector?

Have you tried the old fashioned 15pin vga connector?

Just some thoughts bud

Think when I first plugged this screen into that rig it was outputting at 1280x1024, pretty sure that looked fine.
I've been using a VGA cable, since the only DVI cable I have is connecting my main rig to this screen.

Is an "old fashioned 15pin vga connector" just a normal vga connector? - thought they were just a standard type.

Tried a different card in that machine, a PCI MX440, it runs fine at 1920x1200 60Hz, so perhaps that graphics card is just getting a bit old and picky :/
Also being an nVidia card I get to enjoy nicer drivers + digital vibrance, which looks great :)

Will do some more investigating though.

Yeh perhaps.
Well its probably going in my brothers computer at xmas ;)
Will give it a good check over in that pc though to make sure its ok though.
I'm not cruel and going to give him a duff card :p
