9700pro vs 7970

My Geforce 2 GTS was made by Hercules, I did wonder what happened to them

EDIT: They got bought out by Guillemot in 2002 who then stopped making gfx cards in 2004.

Eh the launch price isn't stunning in a good way. :p

The 5800 cards were cheaper if I recall
That was my point (well innuendo). The 5800 cards had a stunning price because of the performance they offered. The 7970 price is stunning because err, the performance isn't really that great compared to previous gen cards, yet it costs >50% more.

*5870 was almost twice as fast as the 4870, yet it cost only £300. The 5850 offered 85% od 5870 performance for just £200.
*7970 is 40% faster than the 6970, but costs a whopping £450. The 7950 will cost £350 by most accounts and may only offer 15-20% boosts above previous gen cards. It may even struggle to beat last gen's GTX580.

If the launch price was £450 555BUK how comes quite a few of us early adopters only paid £419?

Whopping, but only in your imaginatitive pricing markup.

£420 is whopping for a card that is not really a big step forward. Otherwise, why has it not sold out in the first week like every other top-end AMD/NVidia card has in the past. NVidia haven't even seen the need to drop prices of their old-gen top card, which is unheard of.

I maintain that the 7970 is overpriced, and underperforms in terms of usual next-gen bumps. It also offers extremely few worthwhile new features from what I can see.

..and £419 is not the average price. At launch almost all 5850's were £200 and 5870's were £300.

Have you actually used one, or are you just derping? Not a big step forward? Competes with 570sli and eats 580's for brunch? Riiiiggghhht :p

Launch price and average price are completely different. The reason why not many sold here is probably people searching on teh internetz.

Around £420 is the official RRP of the card including VAT. A lot of UK retailers bumped the cards up in price over the course of the launch day.

The GTX480 did not offer a massive performance boost over the HD5870 but was around £400 to £500 at launch. The GTX580 did not offer a massive performance boost over the GTX480 and was around £385 to £445 at launch.

Edit!!

Even the GTX480 was around 40% faster than a GTX285 and not massively faster at launch than an HD5870 1GB:

On average at launch it was no more than 10% to 15% faster than an HD5870 1GB and cost significantly more.

The 480 held a similar performance lead over AMD's same gen card (5870) as the 7970 holds over NVidia's last gen card. It is not an apples for apples comparison. The 480 was the fastest card of it's generation. The 7970 is merely the first card of it's generation.

Even so, I agree the 480 was overpriced at launch (mainly due to extremely poor yields and even poorer supply).

If the 7970 wasn't overpriced, there wouldn't be any left. Most places seem to have stock.

The HD7970 is the fastest card ATM. We have no clue when Nvidia is going to release their next generation cards and how fast they will be.

Hence AMD thinks it is justified in charging £420 for an HD7970 as it is faster than the GTX580 3GB which costs the same.

BTW,Hardware Canucks tested the GTX580 3GB NOT the cheaper GTX580 1.5GB so the comparison has to be with the GTX580 3GB in price.

BTW,I think anything over £250 to £300 for a single card is quite a lot of money.

TBH,the GTX570 and the HD6970 are at the upper limits of what I consider bang for buck for single GPU cards IMHO.

Personally, I am willing to spend £300-£400 for the fastest GPU, insofar that it provides decent performance boosts over previous gen cards, and that it will remain at the top for more than a few months. However, I will not be willing to waste this ammount of money on second-string cards such as the 7950 or GTX770 when they arrive. If £300-£400 does not buy the top card, I will not buy. My money can be diverted into other hobbies which provide much better RFI instead.
