970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

I'd hope its that something is disabled, which could be fixed by releasing a bios update?

If they have intentionally sold it as the 256bit memory bus but only put on a lower version/chip/whatever (sorry my knowledge of the inner workings of memory isn't great) then that's quite an issue.

On the plus side, I am starting to get that 'full refund' itch...

Wow nvidea, these 970s are great.
you need a Top of the range PSU to drive them so they hopefully they dont squeal.
FPS + Usage drops in games, stuttering (There being bottlenecked by i5/7 CPUs Apparently)
Cant use the 4gb of Vram

good job ;)

I've been saying this since I first got my 970s, it's very apparent whenever the vram usage goes over 3.5gb the performance decreases and you notice stuttering and fps drops, you don't even need a counter to see it.

That's why I sent mine back, in Shadow of Mordor ultra settings 1080P it took a considerable nose dive and was far from smooth. In comparison my mates 780 TI was much better. Not to mention the annoying whine from it!

The plot thickens, seems somebody has managed to replicate the issue, with a GTX780ti :O

With the 780ti the same issue would occur as it approached it's 3GB limit, though oddly only when Windows Aero was enabled.

Is it possible the issue is actually with the benchmark and it's trying to write to memory that already occupied and so the card loses speed while switching things around maybe?

Yes, and demand a 980 free in its place. ;)

I will not be the slightest bit surprised if someone (mostly likely in the US) files a class action lawsuit against Nvidia for this.

I bought mine from ocuk on a credit card so if they refuse to take it back ( IF they are confimed as hardware faulty and cannot be fixed ) i would just initiate things through the credit card company as i would any other faulty product they were refusing to accept back.

The big issue will be how will nvidia refund or sort out places like ocuk who will be swamped with returns!

An official statement from ocuk would be welcome at this point.

Well there I was all ready to get one and now this ..

My main thing would be how do you go forward when or if this is found / fixed . would we get a new working card or not ?

if we would then I can finish my build and job done if not I have to wait or just keep in the old card as it is ..
