no doubt a stupid question....but what happens when a game tries to use more than the cards vram amount (regardless of model?) does it simply not work, or does it page to system ram/pagefile(and therefore run sluggish?

You might be running 60fps for example but due to the memory not able to swap fast enough (due to overloading) you will get frame rate drops to single digits. Yes it goes to pagefile usually which is a lot slower.

Cinematic is the best I can describe it :)

No indications, but don't be surprised if it's £599 and more for overclocked AIB partner cards.

Thanks ....hmmmm 599 - likely out of my 'common sense' price bracket....even the 980 is way steep for my usual spending lol, but my Oculus Rift needs are demanding it :) If only I was able to restrain myself from getting the DK2, but it was torture waiting.....then could've got the best deal at the time a year down the line (give or take)

So, what to do gaming at 1440p... 970 SLI vs 290X 8GB Crossfire, with an 850W EVGA G2 PSU in an H440 case with an OC'd 5820K @4.4GHz on an Asus X99-S mbd + 16GB RAM. Annoyingly, no decent reference option for AMD. 970 ref card is solid though (apart from the 3.5GB issue of course).

Ordered a Asus GTX 980 STRIX to replace my 970, was considering the 290x at £270 (custom cooled) but put off by the noise level's in comparison to the 9 series from Nvidia :(

Truly impressed with how this 970 issue is being handled. Excellent work Gibbo.

The heat output and power draw on a weak PSU might be points to worry about, but a custom cooled 290 isn't necessarily a loud card. Check out Anand's review of the 290 tri-x. Far quieter than any comparable card under load.

Edit - didn't have a review of 290 vs 970 but 41db isn't loud by any stretch. I'll look for 970 noise levels now.

Edit 2 - 47.5db for an evga custom cooled 970 under load, so substantially louder.

Just ordered two 8Gb MSI 290x's.
Now the decision on 4k or super widescreen just got a little harder. I'm still swaying towards a widescreen monitor with 3440x1440 as I hate it when both my screens have different vertical resolution.

I'd be interested to hear how they perform. What case and PSU do you have?
