970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

I bought a card (like many others) with 4GB VRAM - 256 bit bus, not a 3.5GB 256 bit bus + 0.5GB 32 bit bus.

It's clearly wrong in all perspectives. You might not have the issues now but you will in the future with more VRAM demanding games.

Hynix memory is affected more as mentioned.

Damage control mode has been initiated.

What to do hm...
I play at 4K with SLI

Been mentioned a lot , that at first it was thought to be a Hynix memory issue as those cards were affected the most (or it was more obvious )

This is a frustrating mess. Nvidia should have been specific about the specification from the start. If that was the case I would not have purchased the 970.

I have started a return with the retailer where I bought the card. Should be fun trying to explain technical terms like ROP, Cache and 4GB that is actually 3.5GB and 0.5GB to the person on the other side of the phone.

Ugh...what a mess :(

Who mentioned this?

and can we PLEASE get some videos up or something. And not SoM, everybody knowsd about SoM stuttering (even though it it uses up to 6gb of ram on a titan.... but anyway)

I've read just about ever forum and post about it. Its like 80% on Hynix and roughly 30% of the Samsung memory users "feel affected".

Thats just my quick observation let me find the threads and post later.

I was thinking of doing an article about the mess but recording the videos with my Sony Z2 rather than interfeiring with recording with Shadowplay and decreased FPS and frametimes.

Do you guys want any specific games for me to test?

I will be doing slighty under the 3.5GB-3.6GB wall and just under 4GB for comparison I guess.

Not had any problems with my 970 running DAI, Watchdogs, SOM with all bells and whistles and afterburner showing 4GB usage.

Is the problem more prominent for those running SLI 970's??

But like a lot of owners pretty miffed that the card was sold with the wrong specification's and NVidia slow ass explanation about how the memory worked.

10 - 15% refund or free game would make up for it.

And a price drop to reflect the changed specs.

surely if they knew how the last 500mb of memory worked they could have come up with answer much faster

still even from memory benchmarks shown in this thread still not seeing this 224 Gb's not even on the 980's what gives?

How many of peoples problems could be a bit of nocebo?

I did mention a good few pages back - the 970 IS a strong card, no mistake about it, BUT if they didn't have this ram issue (or the WHY) - then it would put the card damn close to a 980....

GTX 970m has 48ROP`s 80TMU`s and is 192bit - the entire of block fused off.

how did they make the GTX 980m? is has 96tmu and 64rop and is 256bit - what did they fuse off for it?

Thanks Harlequin

Definitely something to investigate. My galax is samsung...

Anything that's not SoM lol

I've benchmarked just about every AAA recently and I see DA:I, The Crew and COD AW being the ones hitting the VRAM wall one notch down from max settings. MGS V is under 3GB so theres no point.

I will test the games to get 3.5GB usage and lets say 3.8GB ?

Then benchmark both with FRAPS. Then do a recording of gameplay on my Z2 without FPS recording on both.

Sounds ok ?

I have AC Unity and FC4 but they are crappy anyway

This is all a little beyond me on the technical side but has anyone looked into older cut down chips to see if nvidia have done it in the recent past? thinking GTX 670 or similar.

You guys can test all you want, the fact is 0.5GB is gimped and cleverly hidden with fancy nvidia heuristics.

Whether you can notice it right now is not relevant. You Sirs have been sold a potato along with myself. The card is worth less today than it was on Thursday. Certainly I would not buy another one now, unless it was £200.

I was just about to test SoM with ultra textures but it won't even run;p It always crashes at the loading screen With textures on high (can't even see a difference) even when the game was occasionaly reaching 3508mb there was no noticeable stuttering.

Because if I bought a 4 wheel drive car only to find out after 3 months of happy motoring in the summer that it actually uses an under age, ginger ferret to push instead of the 4th wheel driving, I would be rightly entitled to give many, oh so many ** No disguised swearing, all swearing must be fully starred out **

J

Seeing as you obviously have time to work your way through the thread doing the important stuff :/ any ETA on a response to what is happening from your perspectives?

Y'know....when your done with all the curaaaaaazay swearing.

Shame you can't access the MM.
About 100 so far have gone through there at around £50 each, furious Nvidia owners are losing to get out of green.
