970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Well I wouldn't defend cost/corner cutting to maximise profit from either company.

Yea the cooler was crap, but to call it a throttling ISSUE is just incorrect.

A lot of people on the Geforce boards are using Shadow Of Mordor as an example - whereby they're getting stuttering using ultra textures and max settings.
First off, the developer states this requires 6GB VRAM, and secondly on my 980GTX I'm unable to use this preset without experiencing buffer overflow at 1440p.
That entire forum makes me weep for the PC community, there's talk of people contacting their lawyers on Monday

No, I'm asking you how you would have made the 970 differently. How would you have done it? would you have made a completely new core with the associated tooling costs and risk destroying profit , all for the sake of a card that's close in performance to the 980? would you have produced two different cores for that, or would you take 980 and disable parts of it?

I was having a play through on Battlefield 4 last night, everything on ultra with frame rates hovering between 80-120. With everything running silky smooth and temps in the high 60s, a question niggled at me... What exactly is the "problem" with these cards!
Seriously, if you were to fill in the RMA form right now, what would you put on it as the reason for return?
i was testing my 970 sli yesterday and came to the same conclusion
I'm not sure how you can make this statement unless you have intricate details of both Nidia's finances and the amount of people who would return 970's.

I will tell you what concerns me.....
I'm pretty skint at present due to a 18m old son! I upgraded my 7970 to a gtx970 to future proof my self, knowing I won't be able to change my card for maybe 2 or 3 years. The 4gb of memory was one of the winning factors in the upgrade as I thought I would be future proofed for a longer period. If I knew the gtx 970 only had 3.5gb of memory, I probably wouldn't have upgraded as there is not that much difference. I feel very disappointed and cheated out of my £300 and am debating getting a rma from hear as I feel like I have been miss-sold. With gta5 coming out soon, more and more games are going to use more vram and this is going to be a big problem in the future.

Well this explains it and pretty much mirrors what someone said earlier in the thread. This mystical second memory bank of 0.5gb just isn't being read by monitoring programs and any bandwidth throttling would appear to be from the user unknowingly hitting 4gb and system ram helping out. Seems plausible and likely true.
Now surely all those with tin foil hats should be directing this anger towards the creators of afterburner/gpus/anythingelsethatmonitorsvram for not being set up to read the second memory bank?
This thread was absolutely painful to read btw, half of you lot are acting like you've just caught Jen smashing your mums back doors in.

Your card does have 4GB, it just runs slightly slower than a gtx980, but you knew that when you bought it.
The 970 has 4GB.
What games have you noticed a deterioration in performance in?

With the minimum system requirements stated by rockstar and the origins of the game dating back to previous gen consoles I wouldn't worry to much.witcher 3 might be the one that will make it sweat......we shall see.personally,I think it's people using settings that would cripple a 980 also and the final usage of the 0.5 gig not being reported correctly on the 970.

This.......if it's the 1 to 3% in general,that nvidia are reporting then biiiiiiiig deal.if it's around the 20% and above region comparative to a 980 then it will be a big deal
.obviously frame times would be nice to see on the 1 to 3% results to see if stutter is present.im sure the tech sites are on it now

If I wasn't having problems with my gtx970, I wouldn't be reading these forums in the first place. I'm having serious problems with dragons age inquisition and shadows of modor. I'm more worried about this time next year when aaa games need over 4gb of vram. It's not so much of a problem now but fear it will be in the future.
