980/970 users - what's your lowest fan speed when running Crysis 3?

So many variables to count. I just stick my fan on 80% from 50-70c then it slowly goes up to 90% as my temp goes above 70c. This is with the ref cooler. Max temp is usually 76c with 1525 core clock after a few hours gaming on random games. Have throttle limit set at 91c so it never reaches it. Highest temp I've seen on Crysis 3 is probably 75c with that fan curve.

What speed is the fan running at when at 90% and how much lower can you set the fan speed with clocks remaining unthrottled?

My MSi 970 running Crysis 3 at 1550/8000 is almost silent just a very feint whir and it sits at 65.c....

I see. That's the MSI custom cooled one is it? What gpu rpm speed is that and what case do you have, how many case fans do you have and what approx rpm speeds do they run at?

Yes MSi 970 Gaming. No idea on GPU rpm the fans dont even come on until 60.c so not very fast tbh. My case is a Fractal arc midi with 4 x 140mm Corsair AF140's which are running at 600rpm and completely silent.

That's good temps. Could you check gpu-z max fan speeds when running Unigine valley for 5 mins? Thanks. So there are no other fans in your system running above 600rpm?

Did you not have a Msi 290 gaming and if so what temps did it get in Crysis 3 in the same case?

I'm only home quick to grab some bits but can have a look later.

No only my case fans. I had a few MSi R9 290 cards but all had faulty heat sinks so they were returned. I had a Tri-X 290 which would average around 75.c in most games on auto fan profile.

The MSI 970 is the quietest and coolest running card I have owned tbh.

No problem. If you could check the Max gpu fan speed and max temp in Unigine Valley after 5 mins that would be great.

OK will do. Are you looking for a quite cool running card ?

My Vapor runs at 72c 1800rpm (39%) auto fan in Crysis 3 but I was wondering if your Msi was even more quiet than that at the same or lower temps. Getting the exact Max temps/Max fan speeds running Unigine Valley for 5 min's would help me find that out though I don't think it would be worth changing now even for lower noise as the performance would be similar.

The MSi 970 is quiter and cooler than the Vapor-X 290 I had one of them for a bit too. I played a couple of hours of Last Light last night and it sat at 65/66.c and is practically unheard.

I would not swap a 290 Vapor-X for a 970 personally as there is little gain to be had. Although Last light with the advanced Physx looks stunning...

I see. Must be the lower power consumpion of the Msi 970 that's making it a lot better than the Msi gaming 290 as they have both the same coolers. If you could post the fan speeds and temps in Unigine valley after 5 mins later on that would be great also.

The 970 uses Twin Frozr V and the 290 uses twin Frozr IV they are different coolers.

The 970 uses considerably less power than the 290 and up to 60.c the fans on the 970 do not spin at all.

Will do later this evening when I get back.

No problem. Did not know that Msi was using a updated cooler compared to the Frozr IV. Has there been any reported problems with the Frozr V like oil leaks, fans stopping like on the Frozer IV?

Nothing that I have heard off.

Here is the GPU-Z grab after 5 mins of Valley

The card is completely silent when running valley and this is with a decent overclock as well.

That's very good temps and fan speed for Unigine Valley. What do you score in that bench at those overclocked speeds and what is your firestrike score?

Thanks. I think the 290 and 970 would be similar performance so it won't be worth changing for me although I do like the very low fan speeds and temps. The Vapor is not bad at 1800rpm which could be lowered while still keeping a good temp but with the lower power consumption of the 970 and the Msi cooler having fan speeds running approx 1100rpm there is even more silence.

Mine tend to run at around the 2200-2300rpm mark with GPU temps between 74-79c

But I have 2 970's in SLI with no slot in between so no room to breathe which increase temps slightly.
