980 or 780 sli?

If you have the money I'd go for the 980 then you have the option to upgrade in the future :)

Plus you get more vram on the 980 which is better for higher resolutions.
 
Assuming you mean 2x780 or 1x980, the 780's in SLI would wipe the floor with the 980. But you've neglected to mention what system they'd be running in, so we don't know whether your system would be adequate.
 
Money wise the max i can really do is 1 980 reference or 2 780s aftermarket.. specs are i7 4770k @4.6ghz, 16gb corsair dominator platinum ram 2133mhz, gigabyte z87xoc, corsair hx850 watt psu
