Hi all, been a member of the forum for a while, but its my first time posting.

I've done some reasearch, including reading related posts from this forum, about the compatibility of certain aftermarket coolers for the nVidia 9800 GT.
The cooler in question is the Zalman VF1000, sold by OcUK.
Now i the Zalman site lists the 9800 GT in the list of compatible cards, but in the FAQ section of the same product, it asks, 'Is there a compatibilty list for cards?'(along those lines) and the 9800 GT isn't in that list.

I know that some people same that the 9800 is a rebranded 8800 and Zalman say you need to purchase some RAM heatsinks for it if you intend to install it on a 8800 GT, but i would like to see if anyone has any clarification.

So, i suppose, long question short is; 'Has anyone tried to fit the Zalman VF1000 to an nVidia 9800 GT successfully?'

Thanks for humouring my mini essay! ;)

Jack

Welcome to OCUK :)

99% sure it'll fit since the 8800GT and 9800GT are essentially the same card.

Ok then, thanks for the confident reply! Needed some reasurance.;)

Now for a question you may not know the answer to...
The Zalman site is saying that the cooler needs to be used in conjunction with the ZM-RHS88 Heatsinks, do you think i'd be correct in assuming that the VF1000 sold by OcUK comes with these?

Cheers again,

Jack

Edit: sorry, had a read through about these heatsinks, and says to be used only on the 8800 GT. does this mean that i only need to install the actual cooler directly onto the card?

Not to sure tbh, since the two cards are near identical I'd have thought it would've needed them. If they aren't needed then yes all you would need to do is to install the cooler on to the card and you're done.

No problem :) You can always fire off a question direct to OCUK to double check using the customer service forum Pre-Sales Queries here:-

As far as I know that cooler should be fine. Zalman are pretty terrible at adding new card models onto their website for compatibility, I wish they'd do more updates.

Also, I run a Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 cooler passive on my 8800GT, which as mentioned above is pretty much the same card. It's a cracking cooler, cheap, comes with RAM sinks - but it looks like Overclockers dont stock them any more.

Not sure if you can still pick these up from anywhere.

OK thanks, ill have a look around for that aswell.
I just want one that will run cooler (obviously) than the stock one, which. at default fan speed (30%) idles at about 77oC and under load on Crysis hits around 90.

So i have to have the fan at 50% when idle and it sits at about 55-57c, and i up the fan speed to 70% under load which keep the card at about 77c.

Which is still pretty hot, and quite loud. :(

EDIT: With the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1, do you have a fan that takes the hot air away from this cooler then?

You'd think so - but no. I just run it passive. Idle temps according to ATi tool is 37C idle, rising to 39 on a warm day. Under 100% Furmark load it can push up to the scary heights of 49C, perhaps 50 at a push.

However, saying that I am using an Arctic Cooling Silentium case, which has big holes at the back, and uses a clever system to pull air around over the components, including the 8800GT and cooler.

I'd recommend trying it with a 80mm fan nearby first, then perhaps remove the fan if the temps are low and see what it gets up to. As you've said, 77C isnt hurting the card, and they can run up to 90C+ safely - so I wouldnt worry. Theres a HUGE surface area on the accelero to dissipate the heat.

I like it so much that I'll make sure the next card I get can take the Accelero on it, and probably just direct a small amount of airflow over it.

Fair enough, well i have an 80mm Akasa fan pretty much righ above it on the back of the case (ended up being more for show that pratical as it only pulls out a tiny amount of air, so may replace that soon). but i'll have a shop round, see if i can get a good deal on it.

cheers for the head up!

Right, ive done some research on the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 and as my computer is an XPS 420 ( which is the BTX form factor) the card faces upwards. With the 420, there is a special CPU fan block, which means that a tall, long cooler will not fit.

any suggestions? Innevitably, the suggestions will probably lead down the road of replacing the CPU cooler. and if this is the case, suggestions on that would also be greatly appreciated! :D

heres a pic of the inside of an XPS 420 (the CPU cooler is the big black box in the middle, just above the graphics card)
