9800 GX2 - new pictures

Theyve been there since jan 4th, not new at all.

Kinda reminds me of the evga acs cooler on those things makes the card look very square and hefty.

Why are they calling this the 9800GX2? Is it a different core then the 8800GTS? Surely 8800GX2 would be far less confusing?

Or am I completely confused here?

Nope, nvidia doing gimmicky naming to make people think its totally new. Apparently the oem's like dell etc like this type of thing as people just see a new number\naming scheme and its an easier sell.

Also this is the company that has 3 8800 gts's available. 0_o

Im sure someone else done that, now who was it, nope its gone sorry. :p

3870 did change though with regards to smaller die, less heat less power consumption quieter fan. I think they pretty much wanted to distance themselves from the 2900 series so a name change was needed.

Still was a 2900 though, the 2900 was only renamed a 3870 to get it to sell, if the same name was kept it wouldn't have sold, as everyone would have known it was poor, ppl are now buying the 3870's not realising that they are buying those old poor 2900's that they woudn't touch.

I don't see why Nvidia are calling it a 9800 series tbh, theres no need, the 8800's are not poor cards, so under the same name they would still sell well, unless they want to make ppl think its not over 1 year old.

Optical Audio on a graphics card?! How does that work...?

Also HDMI output = Awesomeness. Not too bad a price either, almost 3/4's of the price of the 8800 Ultra ($600).

A bit harsh, the 3xxx are a lot more power efficient and cooler than the 2900xt, although performance is around the same.

Loadsa this is a thread about the 9800gx2 no need to bash ATi here aswell. Just look forward to what nVidia has in store for us (I know I am), there really is no need to keep dis'ing ATi at every opportunity...in fact I'm getting a bit worried about you my friend (did they do something mean to you Loadsa...the little men in redcoats that is...)..something deeply disturbing that has left psychological scars??

Relax mate. Its OK not to hate ATi in every vaguely GPU related thread :)

(oh and I am just teasing btw :D)

Yeah agree, if its not new tech should have probably kept the 8800 prefix as it has a great reputation with consumers. But tbh its just a name, so I don't mind what they call it...I just hope its fast, power efficient, quiet and cheap (OK maybe I am hoping for tad too much for any card right now but who knows).
