ok, i have a AMD64 3200+ in a shuttle with 1GB OCZ ram...

currently got a 9800 Pro and wondering if i will notice a big difference in gaming capabilites with an upgrade or if the whole system should be upgraded?

i.e. should i spend 200(ish) now or save up and get the whole lot?

if i should go the graphics card route, please recommend a good AGP card to take the place of my 9800 Pro... prefereably one that doesn't run at about 1000 degrees like my 9800 seems to :(

cheers peeps ;)

Pickup a s/hand 6800GT/ultra for cheapo, think they're about £150 second hand now or even less if you're lucky, put the rest towards a new CPU/extra gb of ram :)

There has been quite a few recent threads on 9800pro users (like myself)upgrading to the 6800GS -mostly as a result of the promotions OcUK has been running on the POV and BFG models- and the overall impression being that the performance boost is worthwhile.

However, since you have a budget around 200 and your spec is pretty good...maybe you should consider the X850xt?

regards

7800GS if you can afford it. (£220) It will also hold it's resale price too, just like all end of life premium products.

7800 GS has got no resale value at all, by the time you come to upgrade again you'll never get rid of it as no one will be buying AGP cards, you can use it as a doorstop i suppose. :p

AGP = money down a big old drain, none of the available AGP cards are good value for money with the exception of the odd OCUK one week special... save up, upgrade, maybe even buy a proper PC instead of a sugar cube :D

What do you know... Look on ebay for XP3200's... P4 2.8ghz (400mhz fsb)
Pentium 3 1.4ghz... End of line stuff keeps its value, If you bought a AGP 7800GS now (depending on if they release another AGP card, or ATI doesnt), it would sell for much more in 18 months time than a 7800GT on PCI-e.

People dont wonna buy new PCs if their current ones are fine, they will spend over the odds on a graphics card or cpu just to make there old PC better, even if it isnt cost effective.

Agreed. OCUK forum members aren't the only ppl who own PC hardware! There's a big wide world of AGP owners out there and will be for some time to come.

The 7800GS, being the cream of AGP cards, should re-sell for a very decent price :)
