Hi everyone,i just got a refurbished 9800GT and its running at 68c idle and getting into the high 90's quickly if i run a stress test,is this normal? Im using the drivers from the Nvidia website, the card is a PNY refurbished model and im wondering if theres any specific drivers i should be downloading or tool to force the graphics card fan to 100%. I thought it should have automaticly ramped up the speed on its own with the official nvidia drivers but i guess im wrong, the current fan speed as im writing this is 35%.

Mine used to be that hot. So I put an Arctic Accelero on it and it idled in the 50s lol.

I don't think the older cards work with the adaptive performance driver bit.

Where are you getting the temps from?

GPU-Z and i saw it in furmark as i was running the test,i stopped it after 15 seconds as it got into the 90's:eek:

The nvidia drivers dont seem to give me any overclocking options(not that i wanted to overclock it) and no option to manualy change fan speed.

Im gonna download MSI afterburner and see if that allows the fan to be set to 100% as i dont care about the noise i just dont want it to burn out.

I noticed the card blowing the hot air INTO the case WTF?:confused:

Im gonna buy 3x 120mm fans for my case and IC diamond thermal paste because im also having CPU temperature issues with my i5 2500K aswell wich i cant seem to figure out :( Didnt even get through 1 run of intelburntest and 2 of the cores were at 74c at default clock of 3.7Ghz and the voltage at 1.19v which dips down to 1.174v during the test so i just ended the test so the temp couldnt increase anymore. :(

Ok i got MSI Afterburner installed and set the fan speed to 100% and the temp is going down pretty rapid. It's at 56c just now and still falling:D (It's sitting now at 55c steadily)

I just ran about 30 seconds of furmark and it shot up to 97 and i ended it lol. This seems wayyy too hot.

That's not good pal! :( Whats the air flow like in the case?

Like I said, take the card out and give it a good clean with some compressed air (I use the air compressor and it works woners!).

You could also remove the cooler, clean up the old thermal paste and the crap on the thermal pads and then give it some new paste on the GPU chip (Some MX-4 paste).

Hmm i checked it thoroughly before i installed it and it looks spotless, you can tell its been used because the PCB is kinda curved lol. No dust anywhere i can see,but im wondering if the thermal paste on the thing is just utter gash? Another thing,im running it on this PSU.

Could that somehow cause it to behave this way?

The airflow in the case is utter crap, its a small case and theres only one 120mm fan at the front blowing air into the case i think.... cant really tell it seems really slow to me:confused:

Im going to buy 3x 120mm fans as i can install 2 on the side panel and replace the one at the front with something faster/more airflow and i dunno what size of fan slot i have at the back it looks like its 90mm or something to me(just guessing cant remember what size the smaller fans are)

Your PSU isn't going to cause the heat issue! However, I would look into upgraiding it as you should never skimp on a PSU.

Air flow could be a problem, however my brothers computer that I threw together, his 8800gt didn't reach those temps!

My bet would be the thermal paste pal!

Well considering this is a supposedly "refurbished" product with a 1 year warranty should i have to pay for the thermal paste or could i contact overclockers/PNY and ask kindly if they would give me some since this is not my fault?

I know the case isnt the best but it just seems wayyy too hot and i dont think it should be acting this way at all. I cant really see extra case fans changing it too much either, maybe 5c-10c if i was lucky. I have the side panel off the case and its laying on its side on a chair so all the heat will just rise up out of the case naturaly.

I bought all the parts before xmas and made a silly mistake buying the wrong cpu that had to be returned and a crappy PSU wich was advertised as having a PCIe-6-pin connector but actualy didnt (the last 2 problems are my fault admitedly for not paying attention to the shopping cart and skimping on PSU:o)
So i've had to wait untill today to get the right CPU sent out and now this graphics card thing has set me back again after i thought all was well. Biggest PC build nightmare i ever went through so far, never had trouble before untill now.I'll choose parts a lot more carefully in future.....

Thanks for the reply mate,at least i know its not the PSU causing it and its the actual card itself!

You could try and tell them that it idles above 60c and under benching it can reach over 100c. When was the card purchused? Does the cooler also feel "strong and sturdy"? What I mean is, can it be moved about from the PCB?

Try and have the case stood up as normal and have the side pannel off.

Like I said, sounds very much like the thermal place/cooler needs reseating or the airflow is utter shocking!

The cooler looks really thin and utter crap tbh its blowing the hot air back into the case lol. I'll take the card back out one more time and see if the heatsink is loose and can be moved around as you suggested.

return it to the retailer, as i believe you have 28 days if its not upto standard... be sure to photograph and document the reasons (screenshots of temps etc)... that would be my route.
