Hi all,

A friend of mine has asked me to check his son`s pc out as his 9800gt was showing massive Artefacts, I actually ordered it myself from OCUK for him last September as part of the system I built his son. Now this was one of their refurbs and only cost £33, Now assuming his card is borked, I doubt very much that I will be able to get another 9800gt, So what would be a like for like replacement?

I had a quick look and noticed OCUK had a hd6850 @ £85.00 and thought this would be a good upgrade on the 9800gt, I take it a coolermaster 450gx psu would run it ok? Also are there any other budget cards that would be the equivalent of his 9800gt between £60-£90? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say get the 6850, don't think anything can match it at the price (unless secondhand)

450w is enough, says the PSU only has a single 6pin, so you'd need molex to 6pin extension (what it comes with)

The card is pretty good, bought one for my little brother and he is very happy =)

+1 for 6850. Will run fine on your power supply but you'll need to use a molex to PCI-E adapter (should come with the card). Should offer a nice boost in performance over your 9800GT too.

IIRC the refurb nvidia cards (usually sold here) come with a full year of warranty from OCUK. It is the B-grade items that only come with a 3 month warranty.

Therefore, I would contact OCUK, tell them the issue and confirm it is still within warranty. They may not be able to give you a replacement, but they may give you store credit to put towards that £85 HD 6850 - which is a really great value card at the moment and a big step up in performance from a 9800GT.

Thanks. OCUK have given me a RMA, So will be keen to see if they have any left to replace it with, if not I have advised my mate to purchase the HD 6850, Which like you said will give him a good performance boost over the 9800gt.
