What are the equivilents to the 9800GTX on the new nVIDIA 2 series and ATI platforms, and what ATI card would I notice a significant performance increase from my current card? Playing games like MW2 (I know!) at 1440x900 means I need AA off to play at a reasonable framerate, so looking for better AA performance.

The ATI card equivalent to the 9800GTX is the HD 4850. In terms of raw performance, the new HD 5750 is of similar speed, but it has more features than these DX10 cards.

In terms of NVidia, the GTS 250 uses almost the same core as the 9800GTX. It has been die shrunk and slightly overclocked - so the stock performance is a bit better.

If you want a noticeable increase in performance from 9800GTX, I would suggest looking at the 5830 and the 5850 if you can afford it. You could go for something like a 5770, but IMHO the performance jump is too small to justify the £130 outlay.

Out of interest, is your Phenom 1 overclocked?

I just got 1 of these from my EVGA rma and it plays MW2 pretty well on full

Good point, according to this review -at 1680x1050 resolution MW2 (with 4xAA and 0xAF) runs at 53FPS with a 9800GT (but using an i7 CPU).

To the OP: what kind of framerates are you getting?

Thanks for the input. Can't remember fully, but I get a nice healthy 70FPS with no AA, and is generally fine with 2x AA, but when AA is on it kinda hangs at the key moment when you are shooting at each other or when an explosion goes off. I will run the Heaven benchmark tomorrow to give you some proper info.

This may be related to the CPU, I an upgrading to a Phenom II 965 and getting a 890GX mobo and some new DDR3 RAM very soon, so we will se what happens then. Also, am I right in thinking that VRAM eats into the 3.5Gb limit on 32-bit OS? If so my imminent upgrade to Win7 64-bit may help too.

No my phenom is not overclocked. But I have reached a stable 2.7GHz with auto overclocking. I will be selling it soon if you are interested :) ;)
