I upgraded from this trash:
gecubex1300frontcustomfi0.jpg

to an evga 9800GTX+ 1gb

It finally arrived yesterday, after a trip to the post office - with a few bits missing, as usual with me  I had to run to the Stratford computer fair to buy a DVI cable because it wasn't in the box, also there is only one 6PIN power cable - on the box it said there should be two (I was confused with this because the card only has one PCI-E Power slot anyhow). OC nevertheless sent me a DVI adapter which will arrive on Monday for free :)

Box recommends a 500W PSU and I'm 75W short of that. I thought if I disconnect a CD drive and one HDD it will be ok.

the GTX+ has only one 6 pin PCI power slot so plugging in the PCI-E power cable from my cheap PSU was not enough, I had to use two different cables and plug 'em into the converter thing and then into the card.

It managed to start after some persuasion and a clean format (frikking hard upgrading from ATI to NVIDIA) I had the opportunity to test it briefly in some games. Remember that I usually play below 1k resolutions with graphics on low  I was gobsmacked when Quake Wars and COD4 put all settings onto max automatically and I was getting a consistent frame rate of 30 in QW (its locked to 30) and 80+-10 in COD. Wow.

Then it shut my pc down and refused to start again.

So Ive ordered a new PSU hoping that it will solve my problems.

I'm posting using my old ATI x1300
Now a few questions. When booting, the fan revs up and down. is this normal? Also, when the windows xp loading screen comes up, the fan revs and my system reboots.

I tried all sorts of reconnections to try and give it enough juice (im assuming its what it needs) to no avail.

Hopefully, once my 650W corsair arrives I will be a happy shopper.

I have a Hiper (hiss boo) I read about all the blow out problems. Like I said above, I've bought a 650W Corsair as a replacement :D

Was just watching some youtube videos and all the 9800 I see have two 6pin power slots. Mine only has one.

Does that mean I have to take two separate wires from my PSU and connect both to the adapter as in my first post and then into the single slot in my card?

The Corsair 650w has two 6+2 pin PCI-E power cables, so all you do is just connect these two 6 pin cables to it, but leave the extra 2 pin bits out.

If you're talking about your old PSU (which I assume does not have PCI-E power cables) then you'll need two of those adaptors (shown on your first post) and a total of 4 molex power connectors.

Thats the problem, the card only has one 6pin slot. NOT two like in the video above

Hmm.. That 9800GTX+ is a whopping £172 on OcUK. Why didn't you just spend a little extra a grab a 4870 or GTX260?

That little extra is quite a lot.

Check it out.

You can see two sli connections and only one power connector. Also that extension was the only one it the box.

The box was missing the DVI adapter and one PCIE power cable. Although I did get an s-video extension and another adapter for other video in stuff like cameras and junk.

I think imma call the OC technicians to ask about it tomorrow.

[Edit]
Just found it on another site and pics show its exactly the same as mine. Only one 6pin slot. I think it draws more power from the mobo. That or from the rail.
Edit2
"I just looked on EVGA and the 9800gtx requires two 6 pin connectors while every version of the 9800gtx+ only needed 1."

Good to hear. My PSU is only 425W :( Card sort of reboots my PC from time to time so I put it back in the box and am waiting for my PSU to arrive. I managed to play some games and wow, Im impressed. But what do you expect when you go from an x1300 to this?
