9800GTX or 3870X2

I'm liking how this thread is indicating how Nvidias marketing is clearly working. People, the 9800 is just NOT worth it, I'm not saying get the X2, but it's the better choice of the two considering the 9800 is no better than the 8800 GTX, a better question would've been, 8800GTX or the 3870X2?

If you can get a 8800 GTX £50-60 or so cheaper then i would go with that otherwise i would (well i did) get a X2 as it is the faster card now the minimum framerate has been fixed and has by far the better driver support

HOWEVER some older games do not see gains from the dual gpu solution (not that you really need to be running at 300fps in older games :P) and i did experience microstutter on older titles such as Warhammer: Dark Omen (not tried with the hotfix yet) and i had to have a play with CS settings as i had some issues on it (see other thread linked above)

Im in a position today (made my own post but as the discussion here is very close to my own problem) of wanting a bigger card than my current 8800GTS 640MB.

Looking at 3870x2 and 800GTX 512. How different are these 2? The 3870x2 appears to be the "better" card but requires crossfire, my mobo I belive can do it but how well groomed is crossfire now? Always a bit dubious about multi GPU cards. Considering theres about £25 between them im happy to go with either, want the best card from the 2.

the 3870x2 does not require crossfire...it's internal to the card. The 3870x2 has much more raw power and will only get better over the next month or so as drivers are matured. I would recommend it over the 9800GTX....

Face it when you say its "virtually" the same your sayin that its ISNT the same but you dont want to look at the bigger picture and realise that they are different. Obviously they may be close but how many of you can honestly say they believe what other people are putting on the internet. I know that im going to get a 9800gtx then decide for myself how good it is. And on top of all that they say that its nearly the same price as the 3870X2 but how many of you have found stores that have the prices for a 9800gtx? I havnt found any that are legit.

Lots of results tomorrow, just wait for them. :)

Meh - took the plunge and ordered a 3870X2.
Anyone know how much longer they are than an oldschool 880gts 640MB? Got a fan I might need to move depending how they do for size etc :(

Maybe some of us are in the habit of looking before we leap, for whatever reason.
Of course I don't advocate believing everything you read on the internet, the trick is getting the facts and interpreting them, along with other people's experiences in a sensible manner. I have found that doing this saves money, time and effort when choosing new hardware, I only wish I had started doing it earlier, then perhaps I wouldn't have made some purchases I later regretted :)

The trick is to speak with your wallet. If you go out buying every crap card just to see if your experience is different from every reviewer on the planet, then you're just putting more coin in nVidia's coffers, and they're just gonna keep bringing out rehashes because people are still buying them.

A fair bit longer...it's about the same size as a 8800GTX, so ~295-300mm IIRC.

I have found several e-tailers listing 9800GTX prices, many of them are very reputable.

I have decided to go for he 3870X2, but will wait until GTX reviews are out.

But I'm not expecting much from it after looking at the specs. My BFG8800 GTS OC looks almost identical, infact its currently clocked higher than the 9800GTX bar the mem. (my mem is at 2000)

So? That’s purely a cosmetic difference, I don't see how it's any better.

i had problems with my GTX in my MATX case as the power connectors hit the drive bay's so i had to rip them out! i think that down facing power connectors are better.

Eh? The power connections on the 8800GTX are on the side of the card going outwards, how can your drive bay possibility be in the way?
